I am curious, is Engl considered high-end gear or is it the German equivalent of Crate or Line 6? I guess it wouldn't be considered boutique like Diezel or Bogner right? Don't get me wrong, Engl is going to be next amp purchase. I love the Screamer 50. I need to decide between the head or the combo. I just don't have a good feel for stuff not made in America. I am thinking that Engl is kind of like the German Mesa-Boogie. Good quality, solid as a rock, but not quite to the level (or price) of Matchless, etc...
How does Engl compare in constuction quality to great American companies like VHT and Soldano?
THANKS.
ENGL's build quality is definitely up there. ENGL positively buries Peavey, Line 6, etc etc. One of the main differences with a boutique amp is the custom wound transformers, which take up the majority of the cost weight.
i wouldn't hesitate to say engl in the same breath as bogner and diezel at all...it belongs in that category far more than the typical amps found in a guitar center for example. i just quot;wentquot; amp shopping and chose to buy an engl powerball...i couldn't justify the cost of a diezel and a Bogner uberschall would have only been a bit more than my powerball but i went with the engl for what i'm looking for. it sure as heck blows away the typical mesa, marshall, peavey, crate etc etc IMO. i may seem a bit bias since i just ordered one but that's also the reason i did order it, way more bang for your buck IMO than the typical quot;big namequot; amps and less cash than the other boutique amps! Think of engl as a very high quality boutique amp on the build quality and sound quality level with the other boutiqe amps but being sold at prices to compete more with marshall and mesa vs the other boutique companies.

ENGL amps are above and beyond most production amps.
yep, ENGL are about the same as mesa to me, they dont make any 'budget', 'entry level' or 'beginner' amps, unlike peavey, crate etc..
and they both have a relatively distinctive sound to them - i played a band night once and the guitarist had a screamer combo. i'll never forget the solo tone on that thing

Most defently highend!
They make very good amps.
I used a Savage120 head for some stuff some years back...what an amp.
Fat drives and good solid nice cleans, lots of crunch and lots of control if you use the floorcontroller.

That sounds about right to me.
I have an early 90's Engl 50/50 EL34 loaded power amp that's very versatile and built like a brick house!!
