Trading my Two Rock head for a Bad Cat Hot Cat head and a wad of cash.

Now, I suppose some of you are asking... what's a guy that has stated his intentions of building an EL34 version of his Franklin doing buying a Hot Cat...

Seems like a good idea to me. hey Scott, I'm selling off a couple of amps to scrape up some money to order an amp from you...how's the waiting list?

Not too bad. I'm currently finishing up slot 5. Slot 6 and 7 have parts coming in. Slots 8 and 9 are all that are left on the list. So, slot 10 is open.

I only accept deposits on two projects at a time. That way if someone changes their mind during the waiting period, I dont' have to refund anything and there is no potential of bad will to form.

alright, put me into slot 10....for sure. I'm gonna sell off these two amps and definitely get one of your amps...I've talked about it for too long and your reviews are just too good. Gonna think about it today exactly what I want you to build for me.

Hey Scott - which model of the Hot Cat are you getting? (15/30/30R/50/100) I've been gassing for one of those for a pretty long time. Someday I hope to own one. Let us know about it when it comes in!

I'll put you in line, but don't sell all your gear too quickly as it will be January before I get done with 5 and 6, 7 and 8 for Feb, 9 10 march kind of time line. I don't work fast (as puckboy will attest to!) but I do great work.

Hot Cat 30 Head. The original design. I'm very interested in how they do the power section.

Oh I know you do great work but I'm gonna go ahead and sell these two amps anyway and put the money away as my deposit and most of the final payment. I've still got my Vox and my Blues Jr. to hold me over

Capo, which model?

How hard would it be to duplicate the Two Rock? I can't believe you're getting rid of that! The Hotcat is a very nice amp too, but I'd kill for that Two Rock Custom Reverb!

I'm bored with the Two Rock. It's a classic Fender blackface reverb on teh clean channel and a really nice gain channel. I actually prefer the tone of my Franklin way more than I like the Two Rock any longer.

Here's the rub. I don't play much on the gain channel. So, I'm sitting here with a $3000 fender blackface with boosts for each tone control. Not a good way to invest 3K.

I will not be cloning the TR. But, I do intend on incorporating a few ideas into the EvanRude50 that I'm currently gathering parts for. (Evan self-named his amp... gotta love marketing guys!)

As for the Hot Cat, the day I can get one of my amps to sound as good as the Hot Cats sound, I'll sell the Hot Cat.

Like Gearjoneser always says (or guys like GJ always say) quot;Buy used and play for Free!quot;

Yep, no matter how expensive an amp is, all it's doing is creating a sound.
You can get just as bored with an expensive amp as a cheap one.
Sometimes, I ponder the idea of cashing out of my silver Jubilee stack. I have it packed away in a closet, to avoid potential damage. My only reason for keeping it, is because it looks so sexy, and just get's more expensive every year I keep it.

I'm not in the market for an amp right now, but if I get you to build one later, it's gonna be an Edana headbox with an 18W Marshall type amp inside it.
I want a cranked plexi sound out of an amp that looks like a normal 100W.

That gives you about a year to come up with something like the 65 Amps or Balls 18. hehe

Well, an 18 watt Marshall circuit is a bit of a commodity these days. You so have to play the Franklin sometime. It'll make you forget about an 18 watt.

We need balls! hahaha

from : localhost/ballsamps.com/m18.htmledit.....I want to play the Franklin eventually......it'd be cool to have it in the Edana headbox.

balls and head in the same post.....am I banned yet? hahaha

Uh, I can do that for a lot less than what they are charging... 18 watt Marshalls are pretty easy to build.

Franklin has a much deeper chassis than an Edana. So, they are not interchangeable. But a head version of the Franklin could be made to look a lot like a small box head, just deeper. I prefer my controls on top facing me, but hey, that's me.

draw up a schematic?

Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scott, trust me here, if you sell your Two Rock for a standard Hot Cat 30, you WILL be kicking yourself. I've played them both and the Two Rock eats the Hot Cat in every possible way (you may remember, I owned a Hot Cat 30 at one point for a few months... biggest regret I ever had). They are complete polar opposites, the Two Rock is smooth with lots of depth and sustain, the Bad Cat is harsh, with little sustain.

The Hot Cat 30 is the only amp I've ever owned that I HATED the moment I plugged in and could never get it to sound right. The circuit is completely retarded, the overdrive has to be pushed hard and LOUD before it started to sound decent and by then it was far too loud to be able to balance anywhere remotely close to where the volume on the clean side was. The power section is absolute garbage, there's no two ways about it. Apparently they didn't figure that people wanted loud cleans a long with deafeningly loud, harsh and gritty overdrive.

You know how there's simple control layouts that are useful on amps like treble, mid, bass, gain, master volume? The Hot Cat is a tough balancing act, one little tweak with one knob completely changes the rest of the amp and it sounds completely different from venue to venue, so adjusting to the room is a pain (impossible with some instances). I spent months on end trying to get a sound other than a harsh gritty overdrive with no sustain.

The overdrive channel was harsh and the clean channel was too thin. Since there is no mid control on the amp, your tone gets lost in the band mix fast. It isn't too far from Matchless type cleans, but you only have two controls and that's treble and bass.

I'd recommend shooting for a 30R if you're still hell bent on the Bad Cat. Mid controls are a must on amps and this amp really suffered from that. The R version also adds different voicings to the cleans, so my guess is that the amp got a whole lot better (I honestly can't imagine it being any worse).

WOW....I think that's the 1st bad thing I've ever heard about the Bad Cats.

Well, if anything, consider it a $3000.00 investment in the company amp; potential learning experience if you can take the basic circuit amp; make it work for you.

Aislinn or however it's spelled (couldn't tell with the font) with either 2x12quot; or 3x10quot; speakers...that sound cool?
