So if you hava a bad guitar and a bad amp, and enough money to either buy a good amp OR a good guitar, what would you buy amp; why. And no you can't buy an average guitar and amp.
Amp for me. The crappiest guitar with junky pups will still sound tolerable with a great amp.
The best custom instrument in the world will sound horrible through a Gorilla 10 watt.
ok further info:
you've got:
A Squier guitar with SD pups
A cheap 1X12 SS combo

With this info, I would get a good amp.....you can b!tch a Squier out BIG TIME!!!
No contest...Some Squiers are real good guitars..especially with Duncans in 'em. Most def would buy a good amp.
Are looking for a suggestion on a model for an amp? If so, Tube? and what kind of $ are we talking?
We are talking $ at the level of a Marshal 60W TSL... but I'm open for most brands
another thing... cause if I buy an amp, I'm going to get a cab too so what are the differences between those Marhall cabs? all of them have Celestions but the JCMs are almost 3 times a MG cab...
thanks
Ah yes and I mostly play rock... I'd like to have something like the Hendrix distortion sound, but also the possibility to play some more compressed tunes...
Totally amp, no question.
I would go with an Avatar brand cab. Great quality, reasonable prices. The MG cabs are built cheaply, and have less expensive quot;custom voicedquot; Clestions (i.e lower priced celestions of middling quality at best). The more expensive Marshall cabs (1960s, etc) will sound MUCH better and last longer, as will the Avatars.
For Marshall amps...I'd recommend the DSL over the TSL, it's a bit more quot;classicquot; sounding and warm compared to the TSL. Or a Reissue...JTM45,1987X,1959, 2203, etc with a mod or a goose with a good pedal for the higher gain compressed sounds.
Assuming you are open to other brands with a Marshall-esque sound, check out :
MESA Stiletto (takes some tweaking but once dialed in sounds REALLY nice). May be a bit too high in price though for you.
Voodoo V-plex (or have a Marshall modded by Trace)
Rivera R series or Chubsters (My Chubster is the best sounding non-Marshall brand, modded Marshall type sound amp I've owned (it cost me $1300 for a 1x12 40 watt combo and is quite loud and full sounding)
Splawn amps...(again either the actual amps, or have a marshall modded by them)
Fargen quot;plexquot; amps with the decade switch. WAY cool
Some of the high end Laney's are pretty good too.
Lots of good choices out there.
And what about the ENGL Fireball or R.Blackmore models?
Btw aren't there quality issues with the DSLs?
those ENGLs are quite good - several european bros have them and their clips sound terrific ... and i think they are a better cost value in europe than the american imports
Yeah... the fireball is about the same price level as a TSL... a little bit cheaper

I looked at some dealer's pricelists and couldn't find those... seems like they aren't really sold ove here...
What would be a good alternative at the preice class of an mg cab?
thanks
Amp.
Are Carvin Legacy's sold over there? There amps are built tough and come with vintage 30's.

i voted guitar. here's my opinion:
becos good feel is more important than good tone IMHO. if you have a good guitar, you will probably play easier and that helps you improve. thats a bigger motivator to me than a good amp.
havin a crappy axe with a good amp may sound good, but you wont have the comfort of playin a good axe.
the experience of the other members in this thread hugely overweigh mine. heheh.. so u better listen to them.
hmmm if i had a squier with duncans in it and a SS 1x12 i'd go with a nice new tube amp for sure!!
-Mike
ohh u got squier with duncans... actually thats pretty good and doesnt need instant replacement..
well in that case , go for your amp GAS.
