Lookink at the wiring diagram for both my RG and SZ, I see they both come stock with 500K ohm pots on the volume and tone controls. What effect would 250K pots make, and while i am at it should I upgrade the caps with orange drops? What size? There is a DDb and FSn in the RG and a JBb and Jazzn in the SZ.

250k pots will make the guitar sound darker. Typically, 500k pots are used with humbuckers and 250k pots are used with single coils. A pickup like the JB works well with 250k pots, but unless you find the guitar excessively bright, I would stick with 500k audio taper pots. Orange Drop caps are nice, I like the .022 uF type, rated for 100 volts. That's overkill for guitar use, but I don't think they make them with a smaller voltage rating.

You may want to take a quick glance at this thread from The Vault. It shows a fairly easy way to test this for yourself.

I use 250k pots on a couple of my humbucker equipped guitars, where 500's would quot;normallyquot; be. Then again, I play through Yamaha studio monitors that have berrillium vapor deposition midrange and tweeters. Perhaps, a tad more high end then your average 2 x 12 cab.

It's all a matter of taste.

Thank you rspst14 and artieToo for your response. You have given me food for thought and then some.
