Welp...I'm kinda feeling like an @$$ right about now...whatever that purple gunk is all over the binding is , was giving the illusion of more issues than there really are with this thing. It was making the frets look all mangled on the ends.
There *are* a couple tooling marks on the fretboard, and a scuff on the horn. A few places where the binding job is a little rough (cut out a little too much)...but I managed to get most of this purple $hit, whatever it is,off and now she's not looking nearly as rough as she did before. I've got NO clue what this stuff was, and it was a MOFO to get off. Directly on the ends of the fret at the binding I can't seem to , but between each fret I was able to get nearly all of it off. When I got it she looked like someone had taken a magic marker to the binding (and the pickup rings, and the toggle switch cap, etc)
So, after the cleaning and some fretboard conditioner she went from ugly duckling to a handful of imperfections. If she didn't sustain for days, sound friggin fantastic, and play like butter, I'd send her back, but I'm not making the same mistake I did with my Deluxe...imperfections be damned!
Here's some pics. I couldn't even get the purple gunk to show up in some of the closeup pics I took, so I didn't even bother editing/resizing them for photobucket. You *may* be able to see it in one or two of theseIt wasn't just pigment bleeding into the binding?
That's a pretty guitar.
You need a pickguard tho!
I really really like the color on that guitar. It's nice and bright. The only imperfection I see is the lack of a pickguard.

I know...I do need the guard Though I may just leave it like this for awhile. I'm finding it very comfy to curl my pinky on the back corner of the bridge pickup as an anchor
Thanks,it is a def pretty piece of wood. About as flamey as I like these days.
As for pigment.you mean from the rosewood, TGB? It's a dark purple, almost black. It was all over both sides of the binding. On the toggle switch cap (you can still see some in the pick), on the pickup rings, on the strings themselves...
hmmm...now that I think about it....I wonder if it was pigment from the CASE?????
dont get a pickguard!!!!!!!
I know they will stain RW, so that's interesting about the fretboard being purple/black. I was actually thinking of the finish from the back of the neck sort of like on the binding of my 01 R8.
Now that you mention the spot on the switch tip, I thought that was a scuff. What color is the plush in your case?
The purple is some kind of buffing compound...at lkeast thats what I was told by 2 different Gibson dealers today.
As for the guitar...you suck!!! I wa LP shopping for the better part of 5 hours today and found NOTHING...I tried several of the faded's and none of them looked even half that good. Every thing that was under $2800.00 sucked **** and the few Pauls that were killer guitars were well over the 3k mark and belive me...I played a lot of guitars today!
Anyway...sorry for my rant...that is a killer LP jeff...enjoy it!
BINGO.....
It's the quot;blanketquot; from the case....just got the dye to rub off on my fingers...sonuvabeetch

Thanks man. My 60s neck is for sale She sounds and play good too, but not quite the same as this one.
And it's the friggin case blanket. I put my 60s neck in the faded's case last night cos I didnt feel like digging under my bed for the original case...I just pulled the 60s neck out and it had the $hit on the switchtip and on the binding...luckily it came off real easy...

They are full of crap...assuming its the same thing...tell em to check the case blankets...
Cut the case blanket off....who needs it? Cool guitar! One thing I've found is that any guitar I've had with a satin finish sounded better than anything with thick laquer or paint.
Too bad they don't make more guitars like that. I kinda like it without the pickguard too, since the flame is nice and bookmatched under that spot.

Very nice guitar Jeff and if you put a guard on it I am driving up there and ripping it off My Faded Standard quickly became my number one, I love it. What kind of weight is yours? Mine is a hair under 8.5 lbs, it is amazing. Fit and finsh on mine is excellent, best nut I have ever had on a new Gibson too which near shocked me! I have one and only one issue but it makes me a bit crazy, it builds up static across the back of the guitar quite easily. Live it doesn't matter but it ruined an otherwise perfect take recording when you heard that crackling noise as the guitar moved across my shirt. Gibson gave me a few ideas but they haven't helped, meanwhile I keep a fabric sheet around and wipe down the guitar with it regularly.
Awesome guitar, but DO NOT put a pick guard on that.
Ya I love the guitar but ya don't put a pickguard on it. I took mine off and im never gonna put it back on.
Wattage that thing is beautifull.
Jeff, two words. Transparent guard.

I think I'm gonna let the case quot;air outquot; on the deck when the weather is not rainy..see if that dries the dye in the blanket up.
I'm at odds about the pickguard...I normally do NOT like a LP w/out a pg...just looks quot;wrongquot; to me...but I am enjoying the feel of the guitar with it off...I'm not worried about scratchin it...or looks really..but yeah it is a decent piece of wood.
And yes the finish is a good thing....every faded I've personally played has been a great naturally toned guitar. Some better than others, but haven't found a dog yet.

Well if ya put it THAT way

Thats a beauty of a top too wattage! I have not weighed it, but shes def lighter than the last 3 Paulas I've had. Everytime I pick it up..it's like picking up a glass of water you think is full but it's almost empty. Hmm...have'nt noticed the staic yet..thanks for the tip.
Honestly, this is the first Gibson I've seen in the past year that had as many imperfections as this one. the Deluxe I had a couple of minor things. My 2 standards and my classic were as perfect as I could ask for. My bird is excellent too. After I got all this purple dye off of the faded, it's really not that bad...a 9 outta 10 or so. The dye was getting into every little ridge on the binding and it was really giving the appaearance of a horribly built guitar...Made the fret ends look all splayed out....But the tone and playability more than make up for the scuff and couple marks in the rosewood. This is one killer Paula!
Nice guitar. So is that a satin finish?
No guard... I love the look of an LP sans guard. I can't even remember what mine looked like when it had it on...
