I've heard amps described as sounding quot;Vox-yquot; and I have to admit I've never played a Vox amp. What classic albums show of this Voxy tone?
Most anything Brian May (Queen) has done and I believe most everything Edge (U2) has done.
The solo in Bohemian Rhapsody is a well known Vox solo.
What I think is Brian's best stuff is quot;I want it allquot;. Killer tune.
Anything by Rory Gallagher is probably a strat through an AC30
check out the Beatles too and Lenny Kravitz...radiohead and the foo fighters also use them (or did at one point)...also the pixies, tom petty, bonnie raitt, charlie sexton, the kinks, and the byrds are notorious vox users
Any prominent blues players? Or are they all Fender and Marshall.
Brad Paisley used to use them, but he's switched to some Voxy boutique amps.
Peter Buck from REM has used both Vox and Matchless (which are, imo, almost More Vox than Vox) quite a bit. When I think of cool, dirty Vox sounds, I often think of their quot;Monsterquot; album. Nothing quite as striking as May, but still some cool sounds.
Almost all of the early 60's British bands ( Beatles,Stones, kinks)used Vox Amps untill around 65' as there were import restictions till then and Marshall Etc were just getting going. So what used to happen was the the band would get a deal then go out and buy new gear!! The Vox was just about the only Amps that were good enough for quot;professionalsquot; that you could buy untill then, for the classic early (61) tone try downloading The Shadows 'Apache'or 'F.B.I.'
Incubus' Mike Einziger used it on quot;A Crow Left to the Murderquot;.
When I think of Vox, Tom Petty and U2 are the first to come to mind.
Early Who,Beatles early stuff up to about Revolver or so,Queen,Brian Adams,Yardbirds, and just about every early british band as mentioned..
Rory Gallagher is a blues artist who used AC30's.
When I think of a quot;modernquot; straight, overdriven, unaffected Vox like sound...
REM's What's The Frequency Kenneth...
Foo Fighters' Learn To Fly...
Tom Petty's Last Dance With MaryJane

I actually saw Rory Gallagher on Dec 11 1982. I went to see Rush at Madison Square Garden and he was opening. He was F*ing AWESOME. I had never heard of him before and I never forgot that name. It's not like he was getting much air time then so this was an exciting new treat for me. He was on fire, and I remember thinking how Alex Lifeson was going to have a tough act to follow here as far as lead playing. Have no fear though, Alex rocked.
This was back when you could camp overnight and get good tickets. I had 10th row!
Rory was so great...I still find it odd that SRV ran with all the limelight, Rory was doing that way before Stevie hit the road with his stuff, no disrespect to Stevie, both great players.
oh yeah, they were both amazing. In fact, SRV was the reason I started playing electric guitar and started playing a strat....Rory was the reason I decided on playing a strat through a Vox AC30
