I'm looking at getting a Randall rg200g2. I have not located one in my area to play. Anybody have any opinions besides quot;get a tube ampquot;.
Yeah. If it sounds good, play it.
I've not had hands-on experience with that model, but every Randall i've tried or heard has always had a positive effect on me.
I guess I should add I play metal. I'm looking for something that sounds better than my 30 watt practice amp and something that is loud enough to jam with a band. Thanks.
Randalls are okay, but their lower-end amps are nothing special. Some people really like them for their crunch, but I personally hate that solid-state sound when I'm playing metal. It loses a lot warmth IMO.
For the money and your purposes, I'd suggest a used Peavey 5150/6505 combo. Tube tone, 100 watts, built like a brick, perfectly suited for metal, and relatively cheap used. You could also buy a Fender tube combo and put a good stompbox like a Tube Screamer in front of it. They both wind up costing around the same and are both loud enough for gigs.
Randall has made tube amps before. I know I have one.
I bought it used from a buddy for $500. Its the RG100T 100 watt head. It has 2 channels with shared EQ with brilliant cleans and unreal OD.
I had my tech go thru it before I toured with it to make sure it was road worthy. It has 6l6gc power tubes that I replaced with Groove 6l6's (two of the tubes were borderline) and one USA made 12at7wa preamp tube followed by 4 12ax7a preamp tubes. I replaces the 12ax7's with grooves too. The 12at7 is still in great shape.
I'll tell ya if Randall ever decided to make amps like these again Marshall and Mesa would be in real trouble.
Before I bought this Randall head I played thru a Randall RG100SC 2x12 combo with built in chorus and a Crate 2x12 combo I used as a slave. The Randall combo sounded great but I just couldn't get the organic overdrive of a tube amp.
Since you say you play metal and you play thru a 30 watter now, I'd go for it.
