Hi everybody.

I have a couple of questions on Am Std strat necks.

I what year did MIA strats go to 22 frets?

What's the radius on the modern Am strats?

Will a 22 fret Am Std strat neck fit a '77 Strat?

What would be the average asking price for a neck like this in good condition?

The reason I ask is because the 77 strat I bought came with a replacement neck made by Jackson (strat-head) that I find a bit too flat and thin. Ideally I would like the same carve as my 62 RI with a 10quot; radius and 22 medium frets. Am I better off going thruogh Warmoth for this?

Hi.... I believe the first American Standard 22 fret model year was late 86 but very few... 1987 was the offical year for the new American Standard model brought out be the then new Fender Company owners who bought it in 1984 i think.. I read that the new Fender company did not buy CBS's factory and had to set up their own so they moved all production over to Asia for 1984-86... The Strat book i have says that a small shop in American did make mostly hand made strats in 1985/86 years and i'm not sure if those strats were 22 fret necks....

A 22 fret Fender spec neck fits the same neck pocket as 21 fret neck.... A Warmoth should fit but... You say your 77 strat has a Jackson neck on it so i wonder if they routed out the neck pocket at all for the Jackson to fit? Jackson necks are mostly not Fender size spec's..... but you never know.

Modern American Standard necks i believe are a 9.5 radius...

There iis no extra routing for the Jackson neck. This neck was comissioned in the early 80's by the original owner. My MIJ 62 RI neck drops right in. Thanks for the info.

Bump!

No problem...

I always wonder why when a person has an aftermarket neck put on say a Fender like yours.... why don't they save the old neck? I have modded many a strat in my time but i have the parts to return them to stock if needed... Whoever the past owner of your start was should of hung onto that 77 neck....

also is your 77 have the 3 bolt neck, or is it a 4 bold? If it's a 3 bolt watch which truss rod style you order from Warmoth

4 bolt neck. The story from this guy is that he sold his '68 Goldtop LP to a Japanese investor for $40,000 and decided to replace it with a strat. He bought the '77, but missed the extra fret, so he called Jackson and had them build him a strat neck with 22 frets (something apperantly not available at the time).

He played it this way for about 20 years until he took it into a local tech's shop to have it refretted. The aforementioned tech screwed up the job and had to shave (?!) the fingerboard so as to install new frets. This caused the original owner of the '77 to sell it to me for $300 (score! ). I thought I could live with that neck profile, but I like big, fat necks, which is why I'm looking for a replacement.

Warmoth. Just measure the neck pocket and then check their dimensions. Their necks are great.

I was talking to a guy on the weekend that said he does not want the Warmoth necks as he heard that the double truss rod makes the necks too stiff and the sound suffers.... na i think they are amazing!

How funny, mine is on a Chandler body too, H-S-H route but I have a H-X-H pickguard on it, soon to be H-X-S, wired Lynch-style like his Skulls amp; Snakes ESP. Boat contour, 6105 frets, satin finish. Plays like butter.

Most amazing guitar i have ever owned... I also had Warmoth put 6105's on my neck but i went with the standard contour.... Been thinking of getting a Rosewood neck with the Wolfgang contour for it oneday...

I just did a natural stain finish on mine. Mine is around the same age. Built it in November 1993. The next project will be painted, probably a red of some sort or vintage white, same neck specs though. It's going to be a Tele.

what do y'all think of the Clapton contour? Is it the same as the Clqpton sig strat? I plamp;yed one of those a while ago and loved the neck shape on it.

I like Warmoth's Clapton contour. I prefer that to the standard thin.

I also have a USACG neck that's a '54 contour, and it's the best custom neck I've got out of about 8. It goes from a soft V to a C.as far as the Fender history, I thought the American strats started being made again around '82, but I don't know if they referred to them as quot;American Standardsquot; then, but as I remember, that's about when the new owners restarted production.
and yes, they cut back on production staff in order to focus on a smaller number of well made guitars, since they knew that the Japanese strats were considered better quality at that time.

The newest Fender Strat book put out by Fender themselfs says that the new owners of Fender bought the company from CBS in late 1984 but they did not buy the factory... The old CBS factory was sub contracted to produce a pile of guitars over a few months to buy the new guys more time to get a factory going but keep Fender guitars in the stores.. They also made contracts with Asian companies to make imported Fenders. It took them 2 years to get a USA factory open and the first American Standard production models were produced in late 1986. Very few American Standards were made in 1986 and are rare. There was a small warehouse that held 20 or so craftsman in 1985/86 making guitars... very limited numbers.. It was in this warehouse that they came up with the new American Standard strat design....

sorry, I was going from memory on that ... I thought it was '82 when I saw the new American strats

now I'll have to go actually read the book
