The Fred is pretty agressive for being relatively low output. It cleans up really well, and under gain it behaves very cool IMO. For one thing, harmonics just fall out of it, but it also takes on almost single-coil type qualities. What I mean is that under gain it tightens up and retains clarity very well instead of fattening up and getting beefy like some bridge buckers. It's got a bit of a vocal quality to it, but it's not at all nasal like a JB. Some people have equated the Fred w/ Duncan's Screamin' Demon, but I can't confirm or deny that. The Fred is my pick for a versatile and modern sounding A5 bridge pickup, especially in alder or basswood. It didn't really like mahogany too much.

EDIT: I actually have some clips w/ the Fred. Go the link below and check out quot;Zendrivequot;, quot;Mosferatuquot;, and quot;Zen amp; Mosquot;. All clips alternate between clean and dirty starting on the neck pickup (PAF Pro) and then go to the Fred in the bridge. The signal path was guitar-gt;pedalboard-gt;GuitarPort.

I'd say that the FRED is somewhat like the screamin demon, but....they're still totally different beasts. The fred has far less growl to it.

The FRED is probably one of my favorite dimarzio pickups, its almost like the JB, only the mid spike is a bit lower. It is somewhat difficult to explain...but its a cool pickup.

The Fred is like a PAF Pro with the addition of a hugh midrange hump.

You can listen to three clips (follow the link in my sig) I did with the Fred (2 at the bridge and 1 at the neck, just read the definitions to identify the clips).

I really liked the Fred at the bridge. It is modern sounding like the JB but it has nothing I hate about the JB. No annoying highs and no chainsaw, honky distortion which I suppose is the high-mid peak of the JB.

The Fred is really what DMZ says about it: a beefed up, middier Paf Pro.

People often criticize DiMarzio, but nobody can deny the incredibile accuracy of their Web Site and the quality of their customer service. They always answer any request within 24 hours and they never gave me a bad advice.

DiMarzio probably realize today that their decision of copyrighting double cream pickups was a bad business decision. It hurt their image much more than it attracted more business to them.

I'm still a very big fan of their products, which are more targeted at modern and innovative products than vintage products like Seymour's.
