I'm building a Tele (swamp ash body and maple neck) and am getting down to deciding on pickups. I'm kind of digging the idea of the Five-Two pickup.
Questions:
1) Does anyone have any experience with it, and what do you think?
2) Is it worth it to get the tapped version? Is the tapped version wired hotter than standard, or does it just tap the regular Five-Two?
Most importantly,
3) What's a good match as far as a neck pickup goes? I know they make a Five-Two neck, but the smoother highs and punchier lows doesn't seem as critical for a neck pickup as it is for a bridge. What would balance well and sound great?
Thanks for any advice or thoughts!
When I was asking lotsa questions about 5/2 experienced people here and on the TDPRI led me towards the JD. I followed their advice and am quite happy. BUT, I have to admit that I did not try a 5/2 and do not know jack sh*t about its tone. Writing these to give you an idea of what I went through.
Good luck,
B
I tried a set of them in my 52RI but changed them out for a set of Antiquitys in a hurry. I did not like them. They had that ice-pick thing going and did not have that nasal tone that I look for in a tele. Guitar tone is such an subjective thing and you might love them, but I couldn't get them out fast enough.

Icepick is not the way I would describe the 5/2. I've only used the 5/2 Strat neck pickup, but I thought it was great. Maybe the Tele 5/2 is different?
I really like the concept of the five-two.but on single coils I like Alnico II or IV magnets.....not a big ALnico V fan with singles.

Where do you get Alnico 4 singles?

Dont know but I'd sure like to find some.
I only have A2 singles...but my Fralins are all A4 and to get that in a single would be ideal.
I find A5 singles to bright for my tastes. A 4 would be nice. Bare Knuckle pickups has an A3 set called the Apache.

Tim told me they make a4 singles too, generally for bright guitars. Ask him.

He is but only for humbuckers. He makes only one set that isn't 5 or 2, the 54's which are Alnico 3's.
