for the record, I'm usually a duncan guy =) I have JB's in both of my guitars (one of which I'm selling..see signature!!)..the one that I'm selling has been replaced with a EBMM petrucci model..
at first I hated both pickups....but, since the pup's mounted to the body, I raised the pole peices and I'm diggin' the neck pup..and in split coil, they sound fantastic together...
but the bridge pup is leaving me a little dry..it just doesn't quite have enough power to it...I like a hotter pup, like the JB..I dont' like something SUPER hot though..
I think I wanna go with a dimarzio this time around..just to try something different....anything that's kinda close to JB in dynamics and eq 'personality' in the dimarzio line?
I know, it's a hard question..but it doesn't hurt to ask =)
could I make a closer comparison to output as well as DC resistance? only thing is, the duncan site doesn't give a number to the output...but they both do with dc resistance....thanks!
The Tone Zone is similar in the fact that it's an Alnico 5 high output bridge pup, but it's very fat. Bass and midrange are accentuated. With that said, I just replaced a JB with a TZ in the axe in my sig and I'm lovin it. Really warmed up and fattened the tone of the guitar. And it still has that similar searing smooth lead tone of the JB, just with extra meat all around.
Most Dimarzios don't have that bright top end that most Duncans have so they're going to sound very different right off the bat....I guess none are really comparable, however, the Megadrive seems to come the closest out of the ones that I've tried.

I have heard that the tone zone is a very large sounding pickup....but I think it might a little too loose?

It's very big sounding but not loose. Has a pretty tight sound. But like stated above they don't have the bright top end like duncans.

I don't think not having a bright top end would be that much of a problem...it's a basswood guitar....from what I understand, that's usually a bright wood anyway, no?
I have a Screaming Demon in a basswood Ibanez and it makes wonder .

Not at all. Basswood is dull sounding, not in a bad way, I happen to like basswood. But it really sponges out the highs. Basswood also accentuates mid and low frequencies so it's possible a tone zone could turn to mud in it. But then again, it was designed for an used by a lot of people in basswood body guitars so go figure. It's a darker sounding wood and kills some highs due to it's softness and low density.

I wonder if a Steve's Special would work then..it has a similar eq curve to the JB...both scooped mids...this one has higher bass than the JB though..but I hear that the bass and highs of the SS are pretty well balanced...
the thing I'm worried about with a pup that has pronounced mids is that I hated the duncan distortion I had in my lynch before I got the JB...
and another side is that they say the stock pup in the JP is like the steve's special...maybe I'll email dimarzio and get a difinitive answer..
The JB has a ton of mids to my ears....just upper mids.

yup
I say put a steves special and air norton in your ebmm and call it a day.

I think that's what i'm going to do..at least the bridge for now...they said that the neck pup in the pet is closer to the air norton than the bridge pup is to the SS....
to me, it's like the situation I had with the demon in my lynch..I think that and the JB are very similar..except for output...and I think the same is probably the case with the stock pup and the steve's special...
we'll see =) I think if I put an evo2 in there with that VERY pronounced mid peak,I'd hate it...
