Hi, i'm definitely shopping for a new guitar in the 400-500 dollar range. Right now my two prospects are an Ibanez SZ320, or a standard Mexican Tele. If i got the tele i would switch the bridge pickup to either a little 59 or hot rails. Can someone give me some input on the ibanez SZ320? (how versatile is it, etc.) I play a pretty broad range of music, anywhere from john mayer to tool. thanks

First tone wise there completly different guitars, hell there completly diffrent in any way, but if versatility is your thing i would say tele but not the mexican: manly because of the extremely slow neck. go for a highway 1 american tele which is tonally better sounding and has a faster satin finished neck

I tried out a bunch of Ibanez guitars the other day, and the SZ series seem good. But I tend to like Fender styled hardtails since their closer to the body, and so the SZ didn't do it for me there. They're nice guitars if you don't mind the type of bridge it uses.

But in terms of choosing between the two guitars, I think is very important is how the two guitars feel to you. The tele and the Ibanez feel very different. If you think that both feel good, the next thing is that if you plan on changing pickups, know that there are more options for the Ibanez since it has humbuckers, and the Tele has single coils. You can get SC sized humbuckers, but there aren't many models for Teles.

Man, that Highway 1 tele kicks ass!!! And yes, very fast neck!!!

The only thing that I don't like about it is the proximity of the pickup switch to the volume knob. It's harder to switch that say a strat.

Highway one tele, yay

i dunno i never really liked fenders for some reason. i would go for the ibanez.

They are such different guitars if you try them both out you are bound to like one better than the other.

I like the neck on the SZ quite abit. In fact that is going to be my next axe purchase. I played some Teles in the same price range ($500 for the SZ 520) and was not impressed by the necks. I'm a big fan of Ibanez necks though.

Exactly.

Those guitars aren't exactly what you would call similar so if you try them out then one will stick out for you.

Personally i'd go for the ibanez because i'm not really a fan of tele's and that ibanez isn't too meatal looking to put me off.

I am looking at guitars as well. I tried a couple of Ibanez sz520 's the other day. Of Three tried, one felt pretty close to alright for me. I think the shorter scale of the Ibanez kind of crowds my fingers up the neck. I am going to have to look at a highway one tele. I am also going to look at a John 5 Tele. It has a single coil in the neck and a humbucker in the bridge. I am looking for a versatile guitar that can do jazz to rock but not heavy metal. I am also going to look at the Yamaha AES series. The yamaha and the Ibanez have simalar pickup layouts. But the necks are way different. Anyone have a comment on the John 5 tele made in mexico version. It has a custom shop twisted tele neck pickup and a Fender enforcer humbucker in the bridge. This guitar has no tone controls . only one volume per pickup. Any comment on regarding how versatile a mixed pickup tele verses a dual humbucker guitar would be helpful. I am most comfortable playing with my fingers so I am concentrating on string spacing and neck feel more than sound right now. I do not own an electric guitar right now. Help.
