I recently bought an Epiphone Sheraton II, and because the stock PUP's are crappy, I need some Duncans! I play everything from jazz to metal (not quite, but I try...), so I need some fairly traditional/slightly progressive sounding PUP's to cover those grounds. 59? JB? Jazz? Help!

The stock pups in the Sheraton *are* crappy. I had one of those a few years ago and finally sold it. I kinda wish I had held on to it and spent some time improving the electronics. I'm convinced it would have been a truly remarkable guitar with decent pups, but I never bothered to put the money and effort needed into it. Plus, I had to fund a cross-country move and needed the cash...

Oh, and if I had it today and were going to re-pup it, I think a good ol' JB/Jazz combo would work very nicely. It's a boring choice, I know, but I've heard that combo put to good use in similar instruments and it seems to really cover a lot of ground.

i dont know how boring the jb/jazz combo is, but i think its a good choice to cover alot of ground from jazz to metal just like ya want

I have a Sheraton at the moment and have had a couple of different pickups in it. I have had a Pearly Gates set, a Seth Lover set, and a Phat Cat set. for what you want, I'd say that a Pearly Gates at the neck and a Seth Lover at the bridge would work very well. it'll give you a thick, but clear neck tone with lots of string separation, and abig, smooth bridge pickup tone when distorted , and it will retain enough sparkle and chime when clean to play clean country in the bridge position, and in the neck and mid you'll be able to get unk, jazz, blues, and pop without any problems.

If your amp has enough gain, this set will work beautifully for hard rock and metal. Some people say that since the Seth is unpotted you wil run into feedback problems at high gain, but I rarely had any feedback, and when I did, it was USEABLE.

The JB and Jazz is a classic set of pickups. Cleaner neck pickup and hotter bridge pickup and both alnico 5 for strong bass and treble. Very solid set.

Personally, my favorite set in a semi hollowbody is the set I use in my Hamer Monoco Super Pro: Seth Lover neck and Custom Custom bridge. Alnico 2 = more mids and smoother highs.

Some people find the JB to have a very penetrating high end and the CC is a great option that has stronger, pluckier, chewier mids and smoother treble than the JB but also a fairly high output. Kind of an EVH type tone from the Custom Custom...as least alot of people describe it that way.

Lew

I have to agree with Lew. I myself don't find the JB to have a very penetrating high end though ( don't know if you do, Lew). That's what the EQ on my amp and tone control on my guitar are for. In fact, with a 500k pot and a .047uF tone cap, the JB sounds real sweet.

Just for grins, try an A2/A5 combo, Custom Custom/Jazz. I really like this combo.
