Hello fellow toners. I am looking to upgrade the neck pickup in a mahogany body with a maple cap, set mahogany neck guitar that has a JB in the bridge. I a m looking for versatility with this guitar (Rock, metal, blues). I have heard the 59 can be woofy in mahogany and that the Jazz does not handle gain as well as the 59. What are your opinions on this?
You might want to try a Full shred neck.
It stays tight under high gain, and keep clean with dark woods like mahagony.I'd get the Jazz from the two you mention because it will sound a little less bassy in your guitar.
The '59 sounds great in LP's (mahogany/maple), but if you're worried about bassyness amp; clarity, go with the Jazz. It's a great neck pup.

I've never had the problem of my jazz not handling gain well...hmm different folks different ears I guess. I am a big fan of the jazz in the neck slot for exactly the reasons you mentioned. The jazz has more presence, and less bass. My bass player said quot;that's how a neck humbucker should soundquot;. I had a 59 in another guitar and it sounded very nice, but I just love my jazz right now.

If you think that Jazz can't handle high gain you should check this thread...

I'll make change your mind...
Anyway Jazz shouldn't be worst than the 59' handling high gain since it has less bass. That should prevent the Jazz pickup from being muddy under too much distortion...
Thanks Breogan. Thats answers that question.
