Got the 30 watt model...very sweet. I really like the UK 70's setting.
Has anyone modded these with new tubes or speakers? I have a spare G12H30
and I'm wondering how that would sound in it.

I dont think it will fit? 30 watter is a 10quot; speaker.

Valvetronics is the HOT topic the last couple of weeks:

Definetely change that tube--it is garbage. I really, really like the Ruby 12AX7 I got from Musician's Friend and the Groove Tubes 12AX7-M I got off eBAY. I stayed with the GT tube.
As far as the speaker, replace the tube first then see what you think. I put a V30 and a G12H30 in my AD60VTX first and they sounded really bad. Once I changed the tube, I tried them again and they sounded just fantastic. Celestion has the new Vintage 10 speaker which I've heard good things about.

Just FYI--a rep from Vox told me that the models are of the same quality as the more expensive blue grill Vox amps but things like the speaker can make a difference as far as sound.

Thanks for the info - I see that you are the king of modding these amps!!
Just so I have this straight - you are recommending swapping the 12AX7 tube in the amp? How many are there?

Jonny

If you change the tube to a higher quality tube, it'll make a difference, but not night/day, just better. To do it, you'll need to remove the chassis, and use a flathead screwdriver to wedge the tube out carefully, while wiggling it with another hand. They buried it deep inside, so it's tricky.

The main thing is to spend time mixing the OD models with the amp models, so you can find the best tones in the amp. Experiment a lot, and store everything that's good.

man, all these valvetronix threads are making me want to pull the trigger on an AD120 head.

LOL, not the king but I enjoy trying different things so I just went nuts and tried literally EVERYTHING everyone on this site recommended. These guys rule. There is only one tube. First I got the AD50VT but it had a ton of problems so I sent it back but I'm sure the tube swap will affect the tone of your amp as well. I took Jumpmarine's advice and removed the rubber ring around the tube then wrapped some packing tape around it and wiggled it back and forth while gently pulling. Came out like it was greased.

As far as what Gearjoneser said, my amp may have just had a really bad tube because the difference from the STOCK tube was night and day. I didn't even keep it as a backup. I threw it away. However, the differences between the three quot;goodquot; tubes were just a matter of preference. All three sounded great. The third one I used by the way was a NOS Mullard 12AT7.

I think I was the one that said you had a bad tube or a bad amp...
GJ had his Valvetronix amp first and then me.Both of us and JM have been very quot;instrumentalquot; in getting alot of other forum members into this great amp! I'm pretty deep into mine....

As far as replacing the tube(s)....I've found I can do it by using a spark plug wire boot puller...I don't even have to pull the chassis.I just remove the rubber ring and I gently rock the tube out...

Do you guys have any customized settings you discovered that you can share?

You sure were! Thank god it was only a bad tube. I love this amp. I ordered an Earcandy Buzzbomb 2X12 that I'm going to put the V30 amp; G12H30 Hellatones in. I'll put the Neodog back in the combo when I get it.

I haven't really saved any patches yet. I'm still using more like a regular amp and just dialing in what I want when I turn it on.

I'm still considering picking one of these up. Last year I tried out the 50 watt model and I thought the Tweed 4x10 and the UK '70 setting sounded great. The only thing that stops me is the reviews. Seems to be about 50/50.

it's real tempting. after hearing GJ's heavier clip from it i think it may work well for me. i'm pretty sure it would be on the recto setting 90% of the time lol. i'm not much of a clean player (just now and again) so i'm just after a good fat distortion sound that works at low volume for home use and has enough volume to cut through in a real loud heavy band situation.

If you can afford it,go with the 60 watter or the 120 watt VTH or VTX combo series....

Both of my Neo-Dogs were sold on E Bay and I Love the V30s in my Vox cabinet.

if i do it i'll go with the 120w head and use it with my splawn cab. i can swing the price no problem i'm just still not sure it's 100% what i want. need to play one again.
