I heard some real good things from another guitarist who WAS a HUGE EMG 81 fan.
he said after hearing the evolution he switched over from the 81 to it in his guitars?
now i know the evolution will not have te output of a 81 but how does it compare to another favorite passive the JB?
I'm no expert on dimarzios but I heard an evolution once a while ago and I don't remember it having that upper mid spike like the JB and the evolution is supposedly a little hotter.
I've used them both and the Evolution has upper mids like the JB but they are a little different sounding. It's fairly bright like the JB and cuts equally as well, however, it *feels* like an active pickup. Extremely clear and tight....the tightest passive I've ever used actually. Feels more like an EMG to me. It's about as hot as a JB though....maybe a little hotter.
The neck pickup kicks a ton of ass, that's all I can say!
I never knew the EVO was styled like a passive EMG 81... I learn something new every day on this forum.. and a million other things!

I wouldn't say it's styled after an 81 but it's got that tight somewhat compressed sound going on like the 81. EQ'd a bit differently though to my ears.
The Evo is the definitely the most harsh pickup I've used. It's also one of only a few I really didn't like. It sounds a lot better (to me) with oxide caps (Invader) than the hex poles.
The Evolution was designed specifically for an Alder Bodied guitar. That's where it is home. I've had mine in a ESP Jake E Lee, a Jackson Performer PS-2 (both Alder), an Ibanez RG750 (Basswood) a Charvel 750XL (Mahogany w/ maple cap) and a Poplar bodied Tele. It sounded by far the best in the Jake. It's extremely hot (3rd hottest Dimarzio pup) and has an amazingingly complex mid tone due to it's dual resonance design. It cuts through processing and jumps out of the mix very easily and will not hide your playing. If you are a sloppy player, you'll hear it. It splits really well too and sounds good combined with a single.
To get back on topic a bit better, it doesn;t compare to a JB at all. THe JB is kind of Hot Vintage, where the EVO is Hot Modern.
One of my favourites.

One of my favourites.Youve pretty much got everything down but... the evolution definetly was NOT designed specificly for alder bodies. The evolution was designed specificly for STEVE VAI and he uses basswood bodies more so than alder. I have an EVO in my Bridge right now and ive used a JB in my Bridge.. i have an ibanez s470 mahogany bodied guitar. I can tell you that the JB and the EVO are extremly different. The evolution its the winner in this fight simply because....
1. You get WAY more sustain
2. Its very sensitive to how you pick your notes unlike the JB
3. When you your volume down it gets clean rather then muddy
4. The harmonics are incredible as apposed to the JB
5. it can take alot of sounds.. IE high gain distortion louder cleans without becoming distorted.
The evolution is just better than the JB in my opinion i mean.. the JB tends to loose volume if your soloing then you go to your bass notes and that pisses me off lol... as opposed to the evolution where the volume stays the same and you get killer tone with whatever you put it through.
hahahaha !!! I was about to post exactly the same thread!
Thanks guys
