Well, the only DiMarzios I have owned were the Breeds and Twang Kings. With my OLP MM1, I thought I'd do the Joe Satriani setup that he used on quot; The Extremistquot;. That would be the Fred/PAF Pro combo. I just installed them last night and tested them for connectivity and balance. So far so good. The thing I noticed is that, while both have 2 rows of hex poles, the PAF Pro's poles are black, while the Fred's are chrome. I thought it weird since Satch was using the PAF Pro when DiMarzio designed the Fred for him. Anyway, so far, I see the tone of the PAF Pro being just like a modern PAF but a little more hollow and with more output and character. SRV tones could be had with it as well as Gary Moore quot;Still Got The Bluesquot; tones. It really depends on your right hand technique. It seems to be very sensetive to your playing style. The Fred is fat and has an upper mid bark to it but it's a more polite bark than the JB. With proper right hand technique, I can make it sound like a nice fat Tele bridge pickup. A good description would be quot;Friendsquot; from quot; The Extremistquot; CD. I think the basswood body plays a big part in this too. I love Satch's tone. He's a bit more woody and not quite as processed-sounding as Vai. His playing is also more musical AFAIC. I will be playing at full volume Sunday morning and evening at a concert I'm performing in. I'll post those results Monday morning.

yeah the freddy is real cool and the paf pro is a great
neck pup

here is a real good clip of the fred in action
from : localhost/epicrecords.com/g3/quicktime/
clickie on satch obviously

I can't get any of them to play.....

Oh well, I'm bumping this 'cause I'd like to see the vid and hear more comments.

Now, don't get me wrong. I love Duncan pickups. I was curious about the Fred/Paf Pro and thought I'd try it. I love it. It's fantastic in my guitar...

You've not heard a JB in a while?

Okay.....

With the Fred in my guitar (maple neck and board, basswood body), I can make it twang like my favorite Tele. It's pretty bright and not very thick. It sounds, to me, like some good Van Halen tone from the DLR days.

the fred is the hidden older EVH tone jem pup

I also think that one of the reasons my pickup is kind of bright is that I don't have a tone control...

that is how i used my fred
sounded more old EVH that way!

Whoa lester man! you have different pickups in your guitars every week! and I thought i had it bad! LOL! thats cool tho... i guess we're all in search of the perfect tone!

rock on brother!

The FRED is a Hybrid similar to the 59/Custom Hybrid in that it has dual resonance coils... different wires wound to different resistances. It is not as beefy as the 59/Custom, but it is a great pickup!

I have a Satriani Protype DiMarzio that is VERY similar to the 59/Custom Hybrid... it is labeled quot;SATCH 2 Woof/Tweetquot; on the baseplate

Because the coils are not mirror imaged there will be some single coil like qualities to the tone since a symetrically wound humbucker does not only cancel hum... but some harmonics as well. Most vintage PAF's had mismatched coils with the same wire... that is part of the magic to the tone and why certain ones sound better than others.

DiMarzio has Patents on the Dual Resonance humbucker, so Duncan can't market a pickup like the Alnico 59/Custom Hybrid... shame... it rocks!

Makes sense to me. All I know is, I mean this with the deepest respect to the Duncan company, The Fred/PAF Pro combo is the best humbucker combo I have ever used... At least in this particular guitar.

That's why I NEVER say I'll only use this company or that company.

EVERY guitar is different and some take certain pickups better than others regardless of the brand.

Glad you found something that works for you.

butch, i got a fred on the way from quot;deadskinslayerquot;
I will post the results when i get it in the guitar

butch the paf pro is avaliable with chrome if you request it that way
satch had his with chrome but is now using the PAF JOE in the neck .
the pro comes stock with black but it makes NO tonal difference whatsoever

I'm currently and have been for a while now-

using a FRED/Super 2 combo in my Explorer. The FRED has very high highs. Sounds great for Pinch harmonics/pinging. And the Super 2 is big and fat and has rounded notes. Their almost complete opposites but they sound great together. they sound good in Mahagony but I think the FRED was made for basswood.

I also use a PAF pro in my strat with sounds good. I bit thicker then the FRED.
I think I like the PAF Pro a bit better.
