I posted about this body several days ago when it was on eBay. I didn't win the auction, but I contacted the seller to see if he would make another one. Luckily he was really cool and had another peice of wood and is now making me one. Here's my idea:
I plan on making this a customized Esquire(ish) Tele.
I will be fitting it with a 3 barrel bridge and my Duncan JD bridge pup. I want to get an Esquire pickguard (not sure of color yet) and try hiding my DiMarzzio Twang King underneath the guard as was discussed in this thread.
My problem:
I need yalls help and suggestions on color scheme. I don't want to paint this guitar. So what color would you guys rub on to this bad boy? What color pick guard too?? Any Photshop geeks that could edit these pics with color???
i was watching that and drooling but have way too much going on now . i have some great ideas for it.
i would stain the flames in one color (red or orange perhaps) stain the area around the flames another color (a blue or purple perhaps) and the rest black. that would look so cool with a matte black pickguard from warmoth. plus IMO that's the ONLY way to do that body any justice. a solid color stain would just be too bland for such a wild body. also in all the seams b/t the flames get in there with a thin paint brush and paint them black so it really POPS when finished and cleared.

I think it would look cool with the flames left in wood grain and the rest in a solid color, or perhaps stain the flames red (or orange, yellow, etc) and leave the rest clear.
WOW!!!! That's cool! I like Fret Fire's idea of leaving either the flames or the rest of the body natural and nice reds/yellow/orange for the other then clearcoated.
Some ideers... kinda sloppy- they were dyed by hand I tihnk it owuld look cool if you filled in the routed parts with epoxy. Dye the flames orange and the spav\ce around it a light amber. The border around the rest a natural color.
That body is so incredibly cool. I would love to get one of those. I would make sure the grooves of the carving are in black, then do the rest whatever you want, but the grooves being black would look killer, giving the flames a sharp outline look. Wow, that's nice.

I agree.... Think long and hard before you act. That's too cool of a design to have an quot;oopsquot;...
I Like!
I'd think of going with a MaryKay see-through-white And a nice rich pecan brown on the rest. I wouldn't paint it, I'd go with stain, but that's just me.
Nice guitar, BTW
the black with red flames and natural around them looks sweet!!

black, with stained orange see through flames...
but fill the carving with abalone binding.

i'd paint it solid black, the inside of the flames red and do all the outline in yellow.
i also like the james burton tele with the black finish and the flames that have the gold paisley in it
what an awesome body !
what did you pay for it?
bump... still want more color suggestions...
Personally, I'd pick a more subdued set of colors since you'll be rubbing them in and getting a more natural look. Big contrasts only work for something that's going to be done with automotive paint =)
What you rub in also would depend on what kind of wood it is - but with wood that pretty I'd skip dying it and grab a bottle of gunstock oil and tung oil. Rub gunstock oil into the flames to yellow them up and then do the rest with tung oil for a more clear finish. Personally I'd think that'd look pretty sick.
If only butnut still posted on this board. He would have a cool, very metallic, and very original color scheme.
