Which one do u think is a better buy? and why? here its a 200 euro difference between the two.
If you can afford it get the gibson, no question! Better electronics, probably better woods, and better resale value should the time come.
It doesnt matter how much people argue for epiphones over gibsons, i mean sure they are nice but there is a reason gibsons cost more.
Maybe I'm wierd this way, but I think the Epiphone name has, itself, a lot going for it, especially when it comes to Semis. I mean, think about it - SO many bands (especially british) have used epiphone semi solids (Oasis, Beatles, Yardbirds, Paul Weller amp; The Jam...) not a bad heritage!

Solid guitar.
Go for the Gibson if you've got the $$$. I think the Gibson will definetely hold its value better.
...and I just can't get used to the way those elite headstocks look...
i read that the elitist SG has a bookmatch top. does the standard sg from gibson has that too? is there any advantage at all to get the elitist compared to the gibson sg standard, not considering the price?
the Gibosn SG standard is one badass guitar, dude.
I like to look at it this way: You save all that money for an Epi, but at the end of the day it's not going to be a Gibson, nor will it ever be one. I'd save the extra cash for the Gibson and get something you're going to still be playing in 10 years and still be happy with.
The look, feel, and tone of a Gibson is something not every Epi can match--even a top model like the one you speak of.
It's clearly your choice, but, if it was me, I'd go with the Real deal.
I say try to compare.. Not always possible, but it would give you the idea..
Let's say there was ye olde local music shoppe and it had two SGs, one Gibby, one Epi.
You test them both, and it happens to be a bad Gibby and a excellent Epi. You know which you'll buy. And if the Gibby is good and the Epi bad, you'll go for the Gibby. I DON'T have first hand experience on Gibson QC, but I know that Epi has very High QC on their elitist models. And it's an SG man, it HAS to ROCK.
I would take an elitist over a Faded any day. Over a standard, not so much I'm afraid.
slade
does that mean there is nothing on the Epi Elitist which is better than the Gibson Standard?
QC dude, QC.
Play 'em. I do believe that the real gibson SG might have better feel, but from my experience the frets tend to be real jagged.
I've never played the elitists but im sure they're great. The electronics in both gotta go IMO, 490R's 498T's dont really rock my socks at all. If the epiphone plays better and feels really solid, go for it. But if you're a GJ type guy and are worried about making swaps/sales in the future, get the Gibby for it's resale value.
Conclusion-if it's gonna be your road dog guitar, get the epi. If it's gonna be an 'in house' guitar that wont get abused as much and you may sell it in the future go for the gibson.
Strictly from a resale value issue, the Gibson is the clear choice. I have heard that the Elitist series are quality guitars, butI just can't see the price justification for them. Just my $.02

a lot of the SG specials and faded's that i've played have had real shi**y fretwork...very jagged and pokey. but, unlike the lower models, the SG standard has the binding on the neck, which does a lot for the feel of the guitar IMO. the fretwork has been very nice on every standard i've played.
i'd go for the gibson.
I found my Gibson pickups to be really unusable for my SG, so I wouldn't consider the Gibson to have better pickups.
does that mean the Gibson standard is a good guitar overall?

really? i thought the opposite. i was really hesitant to take my SG apart to drop a JB in it because it already sounded so good stock. i thought the pickups were very usable, even the cleans came out sounding very good with that guitar.Originally Posted by pac112does that mean the Gibson standard is a good guitar overall?
yes.
I already own a very good epi and I still want a real Gibson...

Yes. I found the difference between neck and bridge pickup to be night and day. The 498t sounded weak, thin and shrill. Did you put a JB in? How do you like it? Compared to 498t?
