What pick up in the neck would offer the nicest combination
with a 59 bridge in a Les paul?
Any comment on why you would prefer combination you're
suggesting will be wellcome.
I like the '59 in the neck, but a Jazz is another good choice to compliment a '59b.
I love a pair of 59's also . . . but then again, its the only combo I've tried. (With a 59 bridge.)
Pair of 59's. These have to be the most underrated set there is. Nobody ever mentions them. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that recommends them, but there are others as you can see that like them as well.

Thanks for your answers guys.
Jeffrec, how would you describe the difference between a '59/'59 pair and a Jazz/'59? These are actually the combo that has my preference according to the SD clips and what I read on the forum. But I am still not sure.
I am looking for a Led Zep-like sound that would also be jazzy, if possible. What would be best for this?
I'm trying to figure this out as well for my SG. I was leaning towards a set of '59's but now the Jazz is starting to grow on me for those cleans runs.
I think the answer to the question quot;Which is the best mach for the 59 bridge?quot; it is the 59 neck. I mean, they come calibrated to have mached output, same eq response, same overall tone. There isn't a best mach but the 59 neck for the 59 bridge.
It would be different if you expect the neck bucker to behave in a different maner than the bridge one. Then you could think in other pickups like APII or PG. The Jazz it is say to be similar to the 59 but with less bass.
I have the 59 neck and is a great pickup. Great cleans, great dirty overdrive, quacky, jazzy, punchy, warm... It's very sensitive to amp eq's (at least to mine ENGL 50). You can tweak it to be twangy or warm.
As you can see I love it .
Well I guess I didn't use the right word then. I am actually wondering which neck pickup would be complementary to the '59 bridge so the sound of both pickups together would be a subtle combination, like playing with a third pickup...
In a nutshell, I am looking for a set that worth more than the sum of its parts.
Thank you for your judicious comment Breogan
phat cat! phat cat!I'm FINALLY ordering one of these now, as soon as I find some place in Canada that will sell it to me at a honest price. Failing that, I'll just buy one from Lew, but I'm hopeful!
Im with Jolly...a set of 59's is the best all around set ever!

Thank you very much people, you convinced me for a set of '59. I am preparing a make over for my Epiphone LP. I'll let you know if it works out as I wish. It will be unrecognisable.
off topic ...
how is that epiphone lp 100? how does it sound with the bolt on neck?

Mine?
no, jazz rock has one, i was asking him ... thanks anyway though.
How could there be a better match for a 59 bridge when the 59 neck is made to perfectly match the 59 bridge? Needless to say, I voted the 59 neck.

Depend on volume level...
At low level, the neck pickup is really mudy, and I don't even recall using it. I don't really remember the sound of bridge pickup either as it's been a while I didn't play with this guitar, pretty much since I got the gibson.
But I remember quite clearly is the chaos of hissing noise it produce when I turned up the volume to play with friends.
Now, as I was told the body wasn't too bad and that it was the electrics that were rubbish, I thought new pups would be good value for money.

What pickups are you getting for it? Have you installed them already? Two days ago I bought an epiphone junior. Since then I've been in the process of finding something wrong with it, taking it apart, fixing it, putting it back together, then finding something else that's wrong with it. I had to put a pick in the neck cavity to lower the action. I don't think the wrap around tailpiece is metal. The tuners will have to go. The neck has a bit of a bow to it now that I have 12's on. And there are a number of frets which have been causing trouble because they're too high. The body is no less than four pieces, some are alder but at least two are mahogany. From looking in the truss rod cavity, I think the neck is maple. I'll be getting a phat cat for it.

how does it feel? does it feel like a quality guitar or does it feel like a bunch of wood bolted together?

I mention 'em all the time! Whenever someone asks about what to put in an SG I always suggest a pair of 59's.
IMO, the 59's are a great pickup for guys (like me!) looking to capture the tone Eric Clapton got on the Bluesbreakers and also the Disraeli Gears and Wheels of Fire albums by Cream.
I think they are especially goos in an SG because the SH is kind of a thin twangy sounding guitar when played acoustically and the 59's have very strong bass, full mids (I disagree with those who feel the 59 has scooped mids) and bright, lively, bouncey treble.
As for which neck pickup best compliments a bridge 59, I'd say the 59N or Jazz N if you're playing rock with a mostly overdriven tone and the Pearly Gates or AIIPro if you'd like a neck pickup with a little less bass, more mids and a tone that won't get muddy or woofy in high gain playing situations.
I use my 59 B with a Pearly Gates neck humbucker.
