i'm tempted to sand down the back of the neck of one of my cheap guitars. the finish on the back of the neck is so thick and it makes the play sooooo slow. i've never heard of anyone sanding down the back of the neck, but its the only thing that came to mind. it's a 70's unknown brand les paul DC copy w/ p-90's...could be mij, not sure. ...any advice for this slow neck?

Ive done it to a jackson style neck on a guitar i recently built. I didnt like the thicker laquer finish same as you, I sanded the laquer off with 150 grit sandpaper, then went 220 grit and finally 600 grit. It came out nice and smooth.
I finished it off with a very light stain/sealer, about 2-3 coats.

These are the pics i posted awhile back
