If you guys remember, I had a thread about tracking my vocalist stuff and nobody really liked him. I got my SM58 in today and decided to give it a shot, so here's a new track with my vocals over the top. Let me know how it compares to the old one!

Kinda sounds like it was done with an SM58...

The vocals fit the style and all, but the sound of them isn't up to par with the quality of the instrumental sounds. The vox just kinda sit on top of the mix, never blending with it, and have a small boxy sound to them.

Firstly I like it better than the old singer. Secondly did you compress the vocals any? Some places its quiet, then it will get way on top of the mix. Also you may want to consider backing off the mic a little or making a pop filter cause there is some definite quot;popquot; in the vocals in some places.

I hear the pop. I have a sock over the mic, that's it. I compressed it with RVox a bit, but I'll work on that a little.

get your ass on AIM!

Guitars sound awesome. The vocals do not sound awesome. I am sure they need some compression for sure, but I'm not sure what else. I've never recorded heavy vocals before.

I'm working again on vocals as we speak, I have a pop filter all made up now so that's all good, I'm just having a hard time trying to get them to sit 'in' the mix instead of 'ontop.'

Back off the mic, compress waaaay more- and for the love of god make sure the takes are all up to par. Also even relatively dry sounding vocals have reverb. Don't overdo it like I did but add some. Eq work is a must with those type of dynamic mics. To reduce pop- if you have a stand try angling the mic at maybe 45 degrees or so. I was gonna do vocals for a bloodbath song for fun over the weekend so if I end up doing that I'll make it a point to use an sm57 so I can give you more tips about what generally needs to be done to get a decent sound. Just so long as you keep guitar tips coming for me

Updated with full song and new mix/takes.

great music and riffs and playing as usual man!!

so, now quit shooting yourself in the foot and SING...no more cookie monster, it just kills the good playing and cool riffs, i'm tellin' ya.

however you do it better than the other guy.

-Mike

I know you love that kind of vox but I agree totally with Mike.

I really love heavy riffs - and you got tons of them. But to me, the vox are spoiling the enjoyment.

There may be other type of metal vox you could use for that, right? Not completely clean, but not like that either.Anyway, awesome riffage, Jeff.

riffage is great as always. The vox do seem to detract from the track though. They could really use a bit more quot;punchquot; to em...I'd like to hear some of your stuff with a bit of clean vox as well...though if you get a good mix with some serious ass-kicking screaming in there it'd reek of awesomeness.

Kudos on the trackage bro

This This seems to be the general consesus on every forum... I'll try it out with some cleans when my sinus infection clears up.

I love the instruments under the vocals, and the vocals are pretty good too, or the style. But again they're a tad rough around the edges. However still pretty good.

great riffage....like eveyone else said It needs to sit more in the mix
try adding a little compression to bring the softer parts out and then
use a little reverb. (but what am I saying....I dont know anything about how
to record!!....listen below and you will see) ...keep it up...it takes balls
to sing... chris

Pretty much exactly how I feel

This is considered singing?

I like the music a lot, I just think it would be better with a different vocal style (as others have said). The thread title said singer (not vocalist) so I was wondering if that's 'singing' and not 'growling' or some other term.
