I recently placed a 59'er in my bridge position and am think of moving it to the neck and replacing it with the custom shop EVH. Will moving the 59'er that was for my bridge into the neck position make it sound bad? Or do i need to specifically order a 59'er for my neck? Stupid question i'm sure but would really like to know.
It might be thicker and bassier than normal in the neck. I for one would try it (along with a swap to an alnico II mag).
It's all a question of the balance in output between the neck and bridge pickups.
The only difference between a bridge '59 and a neck '59 is that the bridge model is wound slightly hotter. This is so that when you install a set of '59s the output is balanced. The strings move more over the neck pickup than they do over the bridge pickup, so with a pair of identical pickups you would expect the neck pickup to produce more volume. The extra windings on the bridge model are intended to compensate for this.
So you can put a bridge model in the neck position, but you need to think about how it will balance with what you're putting in the bridge position. Looking at the DC resistances of the '59b vs. the EVH will give you some idea. Also, you can compensate by adjusting the neck pickup lower - as was the norm in the old days before separate neck and bridge models were developed.
Thanks, This definitely helps.
