Most all of us have succumbed to the allure of amassing craploads of gear. I'm no exception but I've found I get GAS at different times for different reasons, which is what prompted this poll.
I'm curious what is the most common culprit for you.

Poll?
The biggest thing is not being satisfied with my tone. When you see something or hear of people discussing something that you think points you in the direction you want your tone to go.
The other thing is obviously rockstar driven. When I first started playing I wanted to be Paul McCartney. I wanted a Hofner 500/1 bass and a Ric 4001. I never found a Hofner I liked even a little bit (other than it being a Hofner), and I got a natural (Mapleglow) Ric 4001. I really didn't like that Ric, but I kept it for 6 years hoping I'd get used to it. But I still see natural Rics and think that I'd like to get another one. I also really dig Zeppelin. My first quot;realquot; guitar was a Telecaster because I love that early Jimmy Page with a Telecaster look. Since then I've gone through a bunch of Telecasters and a whole bunch of Les Pauls.
The sudden acquisition of funds that must be expended...NOW! --gt; it has to be this....
normally it would be the three bean salad, but for all purposes pertaining to this thread, I chose a quot;peice of gear I really need - the reverse headstock mandolinquot;
Skyline Chili.....
Seriously, I have a cumpulsion that if I see something new or if I see one of my favorite players playing something, part of me thinks I need that same thing.
Good poll. Other than my wife's mexican dishes , it's the compulsion. I don't like everything out there but there are certain pieces of gear that I just gotta have or want to have. Like Puckboy's recent Marshall JMP acquisition. That has given me some serious G.A.S. I love old Marshalls.
More gear makes me a better player.
Pictures and soundclips usually do it for me.
Beans, cheese and of course, cabbage!
I have constant G.A.S: Each and every time the novelty wears off from my last G.A.S. attack purchase, I'm on the buying prowl. Unfortunately, it's getting more and more expensive each time I bag my next toy.
Generally speaking, with a mild attack, I go after a new pickup set. With severe attacks, it's usually a new Gibson.
1 too many pints of the Mother's Milk!!! Yeah, I've definitely run the route with amps lately....I think I'm finally settled on the 2 Marshalls amp; I've narrowed down the guitars to 2 electrics amp; 1 acoustic.
THAT'S IT!!!!!For now........................
The want for better tone and more versatility guitar and tuning wise gives me guitar GAS.
The want for decent production quality on my recordings gives me recording GAS, which, unfortunately, is more expensive than guitar GAS.
right now it's necessity. I have no speakers. So that gives me a good excuse to grab a DRRI!
other:
every once in a while I get these ideas for guitars that aren't available anywhere, so I start warmoth-gassing.

100....happens to me on a weekly basis. The gas quickly subsides when I prices the sucker out...
For me it's tone. I thought I found it with the POD (gasp!) through headphones but couldn't replicate it with any satisfaction through the Atomic. I like the 50Blue I have now but still wonder if I should give the XTLive another chance with different poweramp/speaker combinations such as a keyboard amp or a rackmount tube power amp and an Avatar cab.
Or maybe I just like buying ****!
quot;Realizing you really quot;needquot; a particular piece of gear, like a reverse-headstock mandolin.!quot;
playing something and loving it(tone, feel, features, ect.) Also knowing that I would use and like using it alot when/if I have it.
For me, it's definitely that sudden and often irrational NEED that hits me. Usually, it has to do with whatever new song I'm working on. I'll be trying to get some particular sound out of my existing stuff and, usually after only a relatively short period of not being able to quite get it, will decide that Pedal X or Guitar Y or Amp Z is CLEARLY the missing ingredient and I just won't be able to record this song until I've got it...
When I play or see something that I could reallly see adding to my collection, that I WOULD USE.... ALOT.
A large pizza. Or...Hearing something absolutely amazing, and wanting the sound for my own.
