What are my options under $500?

There was someone selling a Roland VS-880 on here for about $250. That was a killer deal. I couldn't believe no one ever jumped on that.

I like the Boss 4 channel that i have. Can't remember the model number. They replaced it with an 8 channel model that had USB compatibility. Built in drum machine and plenty of options.

I'd look for a used Fostex VF-160 on Ebay.

Its the latest Digital 8 track from TASCAM $499, bouncable tracks, built in FX, 40 gig harddrive, USB outs (to transfer songs or to burn them) XLR and 1/4quot; ins, and I think it has Guitar and Bass modular stuff if you just wanna plug your guitar strait in. I got a VF-16 (the VF-160's predecesser)and its fantastic!

I just got the new Tascam DP-01FX this week from Northern Sound and Light at a deep discount. I've read most of the manual, but I haven't cranked it up yet -- something to look forward to this weekend.

It has a solid feature set with better ergonomics than most at a very reasonable price. I've gotten tired of virtual buttons and computer quirks (i.e., the Windows hog), so I'm hoping this will improve the recording process. The only limitations are that it's limited to 16-bit recording rather than 24-bit, there are no virtual tracks (so you have to plan ahead and bounce or backup tracks -- although there is an undo function), and it will only record two tracks at a time (fine for me at this stage). I will still use my PC for backup and CD-burning, and probably mixing -- all of which should be fairly easy with the Tascam's built-in USB port and 40 GB hard drive.

As others have noted, there are lots of other options out there -- just enough to drive you nuts or paralyze you with indecision.

I like the Akai DPS 12 and 16, since they have the same quality as Roland, but are more user friendly, since the channels all have their own fader. On Rolands, you have to share faders. Akai's depreciate more, so you can find a 16 with virtual tracks for less than most others. Now, I have a board and the Mackie HDR 24/96, but before that I had a DPS 12i, and it was a great unit for recording quality demos.

check out also the pandora PXR-4... 4 multitrack (32 virtual tracks) usb connection, rythm/drum machine, and a LOT of effects in a small package, very easy to use...
i dunno the price in the states but i think i would be about 300 $...but it seems you are looking for something better...

I am working with 3 fostex D90 digital 8tracks for several years and I have never had a problem with them ,

If you check ebay you will find them for about 250 USD
It´s just recording no fx or something
