It came with no name active pickups and i either need some recommendations on the right emgs or any other high gain pickups for great harmonics and great clarity playing in drop B. Looking for that chevelle sound
and here she is with the ibanez Sz520. check out that friggin neckWow awesome!
How does she play and how do the stock pups go?
Personally I'd go with an EMG 81/S/85 set.
for emg, try 89/sa/89. 89s are actually a 85 and sa in the same pickup selectable via a push/pull pot. in other words, you can also get an sa/sa/sa with an 89/sa/89 for sheer versatility.
The neck is super smooth. Just a tad chunkier on the back then my sz, and the SZ i don't feel is a shredder neck at all. It is a bit heavier all around then the SZ and the neck just looks crazy long when playing with it. Stretches for chords really aren't that big a deal, but to be honest I'm not doing too many open chords and doing mostly bar and power chords.
The neck pickup is pretty damn muddy and kinda uselesss unless its tapped and shared with the middle sc. I've been mostly using the bridge, not as much harmonics as my airzone can get or I would like. For clean tones I have to switch to the middle sc but it has a huge drop off in volume. the entire clean tone issue might be my need to adjust my pedal board and my ashdown peacemaker settings, but i need to still write all the settings down for each guitar.
I did have to get a heavier low b string and a guage lighter on all the top strigns since I was tuing up a whole step from b standard (the strings felt just the same as a strat in E standard) to C# with a drop B. Sweet guitar for 350 bucks I think.
Still kinda curious as to what you guys think my guitar will soudn like with those different selections of emgs. I can't test them out anywhere around here so will have to buy blind. I want a nice glassy clean tone in the neck and somewith with high gain harmonics in the bridge.
