Do the Historic Les Pauls have 300k or 500k pots?
So I just tore my two apart, and they're Gibson marked pots. After much deliberation I took the bridge tone pot out (I hate taking knobs off), and there was a code on the side of the pot, but nothing that denotes 300 or 500k. (of course I took a picture- but it's illegible and I didn't write down the code!!!) I would assume 500.
No, I'm not drunk- really the picture at least looked in focus when I took it. But you can tell which guitar it is by the floor of the cavity!
Damn bro...you didn't have to rip it apart...but thanks!
golden boy what was the code on the pot? my guess is they are the last ones on my list...short shaft 500k.
here are Gibson pot codes and what value they are...
44071079 - long shaft quot;tonequot; pot, 100K audio in very late 70s through mid 1980s, 500K audio in 1990s up until today
44070034 - long shaft quot;volumequot; pot, 300K linear
44070028 - short shaft quot;volumequot; pot, 300K linear
44070035 - short shaft quot;tonequot; pot, 500K audio
44070500 - short shaft pots, 500K, used in recent Historics, the pots with the scary plastic insides

DAMN!!! Mike comes through!!! Now if we could just read that pot code!
It says quot;gaaaaahhhh Davey's a dumbass and can't take pictures to save his frickin' life!!!quot;
Fine, I'll go down and write down the code.
lol...gotta put the camera on the macro setting (most times a little flower icon) and shut off the flash for a close pic like that.

The light's really bad down there. I think it would have to be with good light or sunlight.
By the way, the only reason I actually bothered to post the pic after I got it off the camera was just to show the inside of the pot cavity of a flame topped R8.
500k it is...Thanks guys!!!
I love this place!

But remember, that's the tone pot I pulled.
They are all supposed to be 500K in the historics according to Gibson..(from what I hear) they dont always come out that way when measured..

...and the quot;bumblebeesquot; are direct copies of 1950s caps...

This is because pots almost universally have a 20% tolerance in value, meaning a quot;on specquot; 500k pot can range between approx.. 600 and 400k
Yeah ..i figured theres a tolerance involved like so many other things...but the guys over on the LPF sure get pi$$y about it
then again..they get pi$$y about alot of things
Heyy... most everybody over there advocates doing a pot and cap swap right off the bat...
