ive heard they help people a lot im just kinda getting into guitar and i know we have a metronome laying around somewhere. but i have no idea how to use it and what kind of things to use it with. are there any links i could get info on how to use it..or how to use it to increase my accuracy / dexterity through practice ? thanks

Hey man, and welcome....

Metronomes are very, very easy to use, and can really improve your playing. What I do is I look at a song I want to play, and often it'll have the tempo (in beats per minute) that it's played at - so I set my metronome to that speed (it's very easy, there's a slider with lots of numbers) and it tick-tocks away at the right speed.

You could also use it for doing scales - set a low speed at first, and try to play a scale or solo in time with it. Then, as you get better, speed it up a bit. That's about all, really...

It is probably one of the cheapest ways to improve your playing. I use one all the time when I'm practicing. Helps you keep a steady rhythm.

are there any books i could buy for scales ? or website with them ? i dont really know anything more about music than just tabs. but i guess its never too late to learn =) oh and i found my metronome! looks pretty old :-\ lol

to scales, then scale references-there are all of your basic modes, pentatonic modes, dimished scales, whole tone, etc. Just work on major and minor, and their pentatonic counterparts first, then start moving into each mode and getting comfortable.
