Guys,

What's up?

I have a fairly good idea about Celestions. But not particularly in Peavey Classic 30's. So which one? Thames, are you around?

Or should I get Weber's version of JBLD120?

Best,

B

PS. The stock speaker farts (resonates on #G) with my LPs. At high volumes it's not that noticable, but still it is annoying you know.

Doc,
you might take a look at my review of the Hellatone 30.

Doc: the G12H30 has sounded great in every amp I have tried it in. More bass and a smoother, fuller tone than the Vintage 30. The Vintage 30 sounds great but the G12H30 sounds even better to me...especially in a small open back cab. I love 'em both though. Lew

sorry if this is a stupid question, but is it always 100% safe to puta 30 watt speaker in a 30 watt combo, or should the speaker rating be a bit higher?

Assuming it is safe to put a G12H30 in, i agree it is a great speaker. I have a vintage 30, gh-75t and G12H30, and the G12H30 is the warmest sounding, the best for cleans and also great for classic rock.

Celestions seem pretty durable to me. In over 40 years of playing I've never blown a Celestion...though I know it happens. Years ago, Bruce and I built an amp we call the Crusder and it's like a one channel modded Super Reverb with one 12quot; speaker. I have a Vintage 30 in it and I used to gig with that amp alot. It's almost 50 watts and that speaker is still like new. Lew

there are some examples of vintage amps that had speakers that were a little marginal power wise
the tweed Deluxe used a Jensen P12R originally that was a little weak in that amp, but probably contributed to it's tone a lot
later, Fender switched to the P12Q

and the Celestion Blues that everyone loves were only rated at 15 watts I think, but they're some of the best speakers ever

there's a trend with newer speakers to have higher power ratings with more efficiency

That's right. I use the 40 year old 15 watt Celestion blues in my old tweed Deluxes and I crank those puppys sometimes. I don't abuse them but I don't baby them either. The tweed Deluxe puts out about 20 watts or a little less but I know I've pushed every one of those watts through those old speakers at some time or another! LOL! Lew

As another example, a Vox AC-30 is the loudest 30 watt amp I've ever owned! (That's why I sold it: to loud! To heavy too...) The stock speakers in a Vox AC-30 are a pair of 15 watt Celestion Blues. Lew

I'm right with Lew here. Another one for the G12H30, tigter all over, better bass and punch- luvverly and no, you won't blow it. it does take some break in time (most new untreated speakers do), so be patient.
I've got 2 Classic 30s and if you have an extension cab as well with one in it, issa grate mate.

Lew,

To tell you the truth my default is G12H30! The only one I really am considering is Weber's (one b or double b's ???) JBLD120 clone.

Any input to that regard.

Thanks guys! Curly I of course checked your review. Thanks man!

I love celestion blue's as well. I have one in my blues jr. Sounds great!

Yes...get the Celestion. I'm not a fan of Ted's 12quot; speakers, although I do use some of his 10's. Lew

Then Celestion G12H30 it is!

B

Have just ordered 2 G12H's, a 16ohm (for my peavey) and one 8 ohm possibly for my blues jr. (which now has a celestion blue).

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the help. Will let you know.

1 for G12H30

Guys,

My order of a 16 ohm and 8 ohm G12H30's from samash came in. But they shipped 2 8ohm G12H30's! It is completely their mistake, but the bad part of the story is that I am now in Istanbul. SO, returning one and waiting for a 16ohm would mean at least another month (due to customs and sh*t).

Is there anything I can do with them 2 8 phm celestion G12H30's and my peavey classic 30? If I were to use them both (one in the amp, the other in the extension cab) could that solve the issue because then I figure peavey would run at 8ohm. No?

Appreciate the help.

B

A shameless bump!

I've not owned a Classic 30, but why did you order different impedance speakers?

Some of those amps have a 16 ohm output jack and an 8 ohm speaker installed. I think what they mean, often and at least in the case of the little Vox head I used to own, is that when you plug the 2nd 8 ohm speaker into the out put jack, your total goes to 16 ohms. (adds them) This might be the case and assuming I'm guessing the situation correctly. You might be fine with 2 8 ohms.

Doc, fill me in...what is the impedence of the Classic 30?

I just downloaded the manual and I think I'm right. The two settings on this amp are 8 ohms or 16 ohms total, hence two 8 ohm speakers. You're good.
