What was your experience with soapbars or mini's? Configuration?
When I say Mini HB's, I don't mean single coil sized hb's like the JBjr, HR, etc.. I'm talking the Firebird mini's.
honestly, i used to play a humbucker in the bridge of my strat and as my playing developed eventually found it to be somewhat of a bastardized sound. i've seen some great players use them and get some cool rock tones, but for me, i'm to the point where i like all the different sounds 3 single coils can give me. also, bridge pickups have come a long way from the old days and many manufacturers offer an overwound bridge pickup that sounds pretty meaty without having to go to something like a P90. one thing though, if your thinking about putting one in the bridge of a strat, my might want to consider one of SD models you dismissed so you wouldn't have to do any routing of the pickup cavities. good luck with your project and experiment. you can always change it later.
I've not done it in a strat (yet), but I can tell you that the SM-1 Vintage mini sounds fantastic in the neck slot of my ash 50's style tele. It matches up great with the JD Lead I have at the bridge.
I didn't care for a fullsized hb in my strat either and I switched it back to a s/s/s configuration. But I am curious about other set ups. That said, my Antiquities are keepers and are staying in my strat for a LONG LONG time. I'm thinking about my next project whether it be a new strat or scratchbuild a tele.
I thought about that with my tele, but I'm so happy with the Broadcaster/Fralin Blues Special combo that I will just have to get another tele to experiment with........and that would be such a terrible thing, getting another guitar! LOL!

I'll second that - I have an SM-1 in the neck slot of my MIM Nashville Tele, with a 54 Tele Lead in the bridge and the stock TexMex Strat p/u in the middle. It's great setup and the mini balances nicely with the other two.
I have seen one triple-mini Strat in my life, at a concert back in the 80's. The guitar player for the Waitresses had such a Strat. He played it through a Roland Dimension D rack-mount chorus and a silverface Twin Reverb. One of the best guitar sounds I've ever heard.
That said, I gotta believe that in thee days of near-infinite choices, you wouldn't be a ble to find a p/u set that would get you close to the mini-HB sound without all the routing and pickguard-cutting. On the other hand, three mini's just look COOL. Go for it.
i also play the antiquities (II's) and they'll seriously make you think twice about putting a bucker in the ol' strat
I recently installed a Custom Mini humbucker SM-2 in the bridge of an Agile LP jr copy and was pleasantly surprised. Different wood/ bridge for sure but count me as a 1 for the mini.
There isn't much info out there on P-90's and strats...I think I searched here, google and the fender forum and only found a few posts. Seems like it would be a good combo and one of my future projects will be a quot;realquot; fat strat with P-90's for the singles. There were a few more posts with tele's and P-90's, and squier even has a P-90 tele model these days.
From time to time, I think about putting Firebird-style mini-HBs in the neck and bridge slots of my Strat -- one that's already routed for full HBs at those positions. I just haven't found the time to put a new pickguard assembly together. It's very tempting, however, because I love the SM-3 in the neck of my Tele and I love the tone that Joe Walsh got from a SD Firebird-style mini-HB in the bridge of that red Strat he played at the Crossroads Guitar Festival. Maybe someday...
It was Joe's tone with that single mini in the bridge that really got me thinking about this. That and a nice candy apple red strat came into the store a couple days ago.......hmmmmmm.....got my gears a turnin'!!!Originally Posted by KelseyFrom time to time, I think about putting Firebird-style mini-HBs in the neck and bridge slots of my Strat -- one that's already routed for full HBs at those positions. a buddy of mine has a Strat with 2 single coils and a Duncan Firebird pickup in the bridge...sounds a lot more like a Strat that you might think...but it has a punch from hell in the bridge position. To be honest after playing his I thought about doing the same thing.
