I'm going to use one for the first time on a gig next weekend. It's a borrowed amp (it belongs to the sound room) and I'm not totally familiar with it. I'm using it with the stock EL-34s. I don't plan on changing any tubes, but I notice it sounds kinda bright. I'm going straight into an old 2x10 ported cabinet. I'm using a prototype distortion box.
Anyone have any tips or tricks or anything I should know?
I notice the boost is really loud, even at the lowest gain setting. Also, what does the quot;cutquot; control do? At low volume, I can't really tell any difference between the 20W and 50W settings.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I haven't owned a Flexi, but I have used one, and they always sounded bright to me. I've really only liked THD stuff thru darker speakers. I had a Univalve for a while and sold it because it was always too bright thru any thing but a 4x12 with G12H30's, and I prefer to carry a smaller cab than that. For rythm/crunch parts the THD stuff sounds amazing, but when I played lead thru them, both the Uni and the Flexi, I got a lot of ice pick tone. FWIW I think the Flexi is voiced a good bit smoother in the top end than the other 2 THD amps.
BTW are you going to be using your new Hamer? You know we'll need a full report on how it goes.
if you dont get any joy here, try posting/searching on the flexi forum. The link is:

there is also a flexi FAQ page on the same site:
According to that the cut control boosts upper mids to cut through the mix.

I'm curious to know what your new Hamer would sound like through it. Have you started using the Hamer yet? Plugged it into the Flexi?
Yeah Evan...Go to either the Univalve Forum or The Gear Page. Ed DeGenaro posts regularly on both Forums amp; he is very helpful.
He's posted a ton of clips with all 3 THD amps amp; the tones he gets out of them are fantastic!!!
Thanks for the tips, guys. Yes, I'll be using the new Hamer. As well as my Jackson SweeTone and a new Seymour-modified Tele I haven't told you guys about yet. And maybe a new Schecter Cosair (335-style with a Bigsby) that I just picked up.
I know Ed. He's a totally cool guy. And actually, he's the guy I bought the amp from a few months ago.
It seems like a beast. It just needs to be tamed.
Tell us about this new Seymour moded Tele!
I was going to start a separate post with photos and such, but to give you a sneak preview: if you see the quot;officialquot; picture of the Fender Lite Ash Tele (say on Musicians Friend), that's my exact guitar. But I gave it to Seymour and he made some quot;changes.quot;I knew you had that Tele, but what did he do?Originally Posted by Evan SkoppI was going to start a separate post with photos and such, but to give you a sneak preview: if you see the quot;officialquot; picture of the Fender Lite Ash Tele (say on Musicians Friend), that's my exact guitar. Is that the tele that was sitting up on the bench at UGD? I know you had talked in a previous post about putting an SM-1 in that one, if I'm not mistaken. Has that been done, and did he do anything else to it?
That's the one. SM-1n in the neck position. Vintage-style large barrel saddles. Les Paul-style output jack. CTS pots and switch. STL-2 Hot Tele lead.
The Flexi 50 sounds awesome through a 212 cab of alnico tone tubbies. Really dark warm speakers, they seam to round out the tone nicely. One of my friends has that rig and I am jealous beyond belief (I am a broke teenager)
Here's a pic from the gig.
The amp sounded real nice, once I rolled back the highs. Many people at the gig told me that it cut through real nicely. I like it. Personally, I like a spring reverb on my amp and that could be a deal breaker with the THD. But honestly, the tone was right there. Even the sound guy complimented me.
Thanks to everyone here to gave me advice. It helped a lot.
By the way, that's a D-TAR Mama Bear sitting on top of the THD, plugged into the J45. Also, that orange stomp box is a new prototype we're testing...
Evan, that Hamer looks fantastic!
Im glad you got it all worked out and I bet it sounded great.
So, were you using the SFX-03?
What was Seymour playing through?
Yup. SFX-03. Shhhhh..... you're not supposed to know about that yet.
thats a 2x10 under the flexi??? wow it looks big.
hamer looks great with that pick guard
DITTO what Jeremy said.....
What cab is that?
That Hamer amp; the tortoise-shell were made for each other. Looks like you were made for each other!
Glad it worked out well for you.
Some day I'd like to own another THD. Had the Uni amp; it was a fun amp to play with but collecting tubes became an obsession amp; that can get pricey!!!
The cabinet is an old 2x10 with a ported back. Sounds great.
That Hamer looks stunning. That indeed is an absolutely gorgeous combination!
The SFX-03... is this one of those 'I'd tell you more but I'd have to kill you' situation? I can't wait to see what it does!
