So, I need to play through a few amps. In particular I want to play some 80s vintage Marshalls (800s), and should probably try a few other models as well. Problem is, no places in the Portland area have any older amps (just new Marshalls, some 5150s and Triple X's), or at least I don't know of any. So, I was considering maybe taking a day trip to Seattle or some other place. Anyway, where do y'alls go to test drive new stuff?

I just did some internet searching and came up with nada.

Guess that means you'll have to come out to NY to go amp shopping.

But, you might find something you like more than your Splawn. Then your world would be thrown into a tailspin

Don't bother with Seattle... it's quite barren in that respect

Guitarville in Shoreline, about 15 minutes north of Seattle. you can crank up the amps, they are super, super cool, no attitude at all. Emerald City Guitars in downtown Seattle is pretty good too.

Seattle is far from barren when it comes to vintage gear. Trading Musician in the college area is another shop that always has lots of vintage amps and guitars, although I don't care for their staff.

Yep, it's only $40/hr.

Wouldn't you have to rent a city or a suburb to practise with that many amps?

Yep, it's in the U district. They have a lot of cool gear but their prices are a bit steep and most of the staff is quot;too coolquot; to be of any real help.

Briz Pawn in the 'couv and their subtenant Doug Howerton.

Gtr Ctr in Clackamas has a loud room but usually not that much stuff worth cranking except for the occasional 2203 or 1959 reissue.

Yep, Briz Loan is right across the street from where I work, and I browse it now and again. The guy there says the JCM800s leave as soon as they arrive. Is Old Town the one near Capn Ankeny's with all the vintage effects and a wall of old LPs and Fenders? I haven't been there in a long time, so I'll have to drop in next time I'm downtown.

I haven't been to Music 6000 in Lacey, WA for a few years, but they used to be a really cool funky little store.

The two American Music Stores are pretty good. Reese over in Bellevue has been a good friend for many years, and I've gotten some very good deals over the years.

Another place that I have gotten good deals from has been Diversified Loans in in the Lynnwood, WA area. Last time I was in though, the store was VERY different--perhaps new management?

And with all the great music here in Portland, the music stores aren't the greatest. I'm not a big fan of either Apple Music or Old Town, but.... For my money, I do nearly all of my shopping carefully at the area's two Guitar Centers, and they have treated me excellently!

For more vintage stuff, you might want to take a trip to MacKenzie River Music in Eugene. They can be a bit pricey, though.

That's the one. They usually have several Marshalls facing said wall of LP's and Fenders and a number of silverfaces and assorted other tube amps laying around as well. You and the Cap'n make it hap'n.

...and if you want an 800, you might also look for a Peavey VTM60 or 120. Basically the same preamp but with dipswitches for most of the common mods to 800's (VTM - Valve Tube Modified). Trade Up on Division had a 120 for about $350 recently, and a 60 showed up on craigslist for about $250 recently.

The Laney Pro Tube and AOR Pro Tube amps will also get you into the same territory but they're a rare find in these parts.
