all of my lesters feel/play differently from one another, i really love the ZW one with the EMG set in it
but sometimes i prefer to play the 57 RI black beauty which right now has a JB/jazz.
nothing wrong with the JB/JAZZ at all but i really do prefer the 81 tone/feel
in the bridge spot overall.
should i just get another 81/85 set for that black LP and leave the wine red one with duncans?
or get 2 more sets of EMG's?
You could do like some guys who like the best of both worlds. Wire the bridge pup for an 81 and leave the neck Duncan in. One of the guys from Jackyl had a LP like that and it wailed.

food for thought luke.
It is not that i do not like the duncan stuff i actually think it is friggin the best made/sounding passive stuff out there but my black beauty is getting a lot of attention from me lately and i miss the 81/85 tone that the ZW one has when i play it

Whatever suits your ears man! I just said the mixing thing b/c I remember how much you liked the jazz.
Luke
Whatever your heart desires because your LPs will all sound different either way. EMGs are designed to be very transparent.....so as long as the guitar is a good one; the guitar should sound great with the EMGs. I find something I love in Passives and haven't been able to fully get into EMGs - seems something is missing to me - can't put my finger on it. Maybe it is that Passives aren't as perfect as actives and I miss that imperfection. LOL.
I have tried many pickups, including Duncans, Rios, True Tones, etc in my LP which now has stock Burstbucker Pros and have compared this to many other LPs with after market pickups and can't find one I like better. The BB Pros just rip in this guitar. Maybe your RI is the same way? Maybe it sounds better with the stock pickups or the Duncans?
Leave one guitar setup with the JB/Jazz set, and another with EMGs. It'll save you a lot of soldering time
If you like the 81/85 set best, by all means hook them up in that Paul!

Don't be sorry. It is better to follow your own ears then let a website decide!
He Lester, I can see from your gear (and avatar of course) that you are a huge Zakk fan. I have got an Epi LP bullseye with a JB in it. It is a super guitar, the Gibson must be awesome, I think.
In mai I am going to see Zakk with the BLS in Holland.
Looking forward to it....

yeah zakk is the man to me!
many say he is not all that good well i beg to differ
the JB is great and i am seriously considering switching that and the jazz over to my wine red Lester? taking out the custom/59 set and selling them?
The 57 BB is getting EMG's thats all i know!
I have to disagree on the transparency of the EMG's. They have great clarity, but kinda make all guitars sound basically the same...

Eh....not quite the point.
EMGs can make a $200 Strat sound like a $450 Strat. Conversely they make a $1500 Strat sound like a $450 Strat.
Some folks like EMGs and with someone like Zakk Wylde I can see where EMGs would be integral to getting his particular sound.
But I guess my question would be do you need two guitars to sound alike?
I own three Les Pauls and all of them have very different pickups in them (P-90's, mini-humbuckers and regular vintage-sounding humbuckers). Each of them have their own sound and tone. Same with Strats; I own three and each one has different pickups to acheive a very different sound.
Personally I'd think it'd be more fun to have a little tonal variation. After you get done being Zakk for awhile you can grab the other Les Paul with 59's and a flipped magnet in the neck and be Peter Green for a bit!
ScreamingDaisy, bring back those clips that had the comparisons between woods.
I still can not believe you guys think that they make a 1500 dollar guitar sound like a 450 dollar guitar.

Wow... did the doctor prescribe you some Prozak or something?

Naw...I already had my smart ass comment out, but Skarekrough is an otherwise cool dude....even if I think he's wrong.
I really think the EMG's sound great in lesters, the natural fattness of a LP just compliments the 81,85,60,89.
i really do not care for the 81 in a strat type guitar just in lesters
