I seriously considering to get a DDn and replace the Ceramic magnet with an A5 magnet. The '59n in my LP sounds amazing but I find myself never using it in a band situation. For this axe I want something more powerfull with more output but still with good cleans.
When I look at the spec. chart it seems like an A5 DDn could work.
So what do you guys think?
Anyone tried this combination or something similar?
never tried a ddn with an alnico 5 mag. i bet it would have much nicer cleans than a stock ddn. give it a try, somebody has to do it!!

I would do it, but since ordering a Humbucker would cost me about 100 Euro's I'd like to have some opinions and thoughts from the pro's first.
The only thing I can add here, is I have a stock DD in the neck of my Patriot. Its cleans are outstanding. Its pretty much, my favorite neck pup. I hardly ever use the Cutom thats in the bridge with it. (Except in split mode.)
I'd at least try it stock first. You can always change the mag later.

Hey you don't mind asking me some questions do you? Pretty cool that someone has this combo and likes it!
Does the DDn overpower the Custom?
Does the Custom seem bright compared to the DD?
I have tried the DDn stock once but eventually traded it in for the '59n. I'm not a big fan of Ceramic magnets since they don't produce very nice cleans to my ears. That's also the reason why I changed the magnet in My Custom.
I just realized the original context of your question, which is pairing up a DD with an A5, to match the A5 in the C5. That would probably be a great combo.
My DD and Custom are, of course, both ceramic mags. They match up in output almost perfectly. I don't notice any change in volume, or brightness, other than the normal change you'ld expect by going from a neck to a bridge pup.
Give me a minute or two, and I'll post a quickie 3 or 4 chord progression going from neck to neck/bridge to bridge.
Here's a short clip and a screen shot from Adobe Audition that shows that the output never varies much going from neck to neck-bridge to bridge:DD - DC clip
Thanks a lot Artie! You rule!
From the clip it definately sounds like they are a good match!
I wonder how they would sound under gain?
Maybe I should just take a leap and order it. I want a Zebra bucker in my LP's neck position anyway to match the Zebra C5 bridge

Gain . . . we can do quot;gainquot;. What we can't do, is shred like the young pup's in the forum.
DD with quot;gainquot;

Where do you buy? I once calculated if I would buy one from Lew it wouldn't be much more than 80 EUR incl. shipping etc.
they're for 80 EUR to but you have to pay shipping

DD with quot;gainquot;
Hey I think that's pretty good shredding!
Sound like a nice neck bucker tone, this only convinces me more to actually go out and get it. Thanks for the help Artie, mucho apreciated!

Hey that's great, the shops around here all charge around 100 Euro's for a SD Humbucker. That's pretty steep IMHO.

DD with quot;gainquot;ok i know this topic is old but i got a question... is that DD pickup split in that sound clip with gain? and thats in the neck right?
Its definitely on the neck. I'll have to wait til I get home to listen to it again to remember whether or not it was split. I don't think it was, but I'm not sure.
What I'd do if I were you is swap out your 59N for a 59 Bridge, since it's a tad bit hotter, but the same A5 sound. That way, you don't have to get a DD and rip all the tape off to go through the magnet swap hassle. It'll probably sound better too, and match nicely with the C-5.

Not a bad idea -- but if that doesn't work for you, Nighburst, try an Alnico 2 Pro bridge model, but with an Alnico 5 magnet.
The part I don't get is if the 59n sounds so good, why DON'T you use it in band situations?
