I've gotten in a dilema and now still deciding on which pedal to fit.
I've not really tested all of them but it seems that modding a pedal will be better.
Anyway, here's a poll about the pedals and I need some help on the following:

Thanks !

just remember, there is no reason to mod a pedal unless you find something you don't like going on with the sound. you will get the most out of a mod by using an unmodded pedal for awhile, and understanding what you like/don't like about it.

but hey, a modded pedal sounds better than an unmodded pedal, so there's no reason not to mod a pedal that has a better potential

Here's where you get into what people say, vs. what works for you. You need to know what you want, what you want your guitar and amp to sound like, rather than what some dork on the intarweb says is cool. Who says a modded pedal sounds quot;better?quot; You? What if I don't know what you sound like? What if, when I heard your tone, that I thought your tone sucks? I'm not saying you're a dork or that your tone sucks- just that I don't know you or what you think is a good guitar tone.

If you're going to mod something, you want it to be at least quot;in the neighborhoodquot; of what you're after, rather than what someone else says is a great sound. These days there's enough pedal makers that make enough different pedals that do whatever you want- and there's a good chance someone makes a pedal that has the stock sound you're after for less money than getting something you don't like and paying to mod it to something you might or might not like.

You know what? When I was looking for a boost I tried/buyed a Boss DS-1, a MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive, and a Pickup Booster and I ended up with a Ibanez Tonelok TS-7. It's basically a TS-9 clone, if you want to know, and I never even considered trying it or considered considering it. Totally outside my field of vision. It doesn't have any bells or whistles and the damn thing doesn't even look cool...but it works!

So yeah, look for the sound you want, but be aware that you may end up with something totally different in the end that you didn't expect.

...this being said I sold my DS-1 and MXR Phase 90...but I also wouldn't readily support the purchase of a Tubescreamer either, because my experience is limited to the Tonelok version...what am I saying? I'm not quite sure but I hope my confusion helps you to be less confused.

^ you might find that unmodded or modded, they're the wrong pedal for you! There's no substitute for taking your guitar and trying as many as you can before you decide. What better way to spend an afternoon?

I agree that you shouldn't automatically get something modded just because it's available.

Also, just because it's modded, it won't necessarily sound better. I have seen a few crappy mods with some of my buddies set ups, and I just couldn't justify their expense.

That said, I had a TS9 modded to be a TS808, and I love it. The TS9 wasn't bad, but it was a little harsh, so I talked about it, asked around, and got and 808 mod that I am very happy with.

u looking for a pedal as a boost or as a distortion source?

even though you can mod something there is only so much better u can make it and i reckon boss stuff is too expensive and a tube screamer is too well conservative (most overdrive are based on them) i would go for a custom effect

yeah yeah yeah, I know when I've lost...
