I want to put gold covers on and Im about to get to it with my dremel........
you cant take the covers off emgs...if u tried u still couldnt do it as their epoxy sealed. even if you do get them off gold covers wont fit on it.
Oh, they will fit.....I have a dremel. Im not really interested in the quot;sorry, but I beleive everything everyone tells me and Im afraid to take a chancequot; answer...what Im really looking for is a in depth description from someone who has cut one of these up and it has lived, such as whats it look like, is the top epoxied to the coils, is it hard or soft material, I mean Im pretty certain I can shave every bit of plastic from the sides and top leaving me with just coils and base surrounded by epoxy, then set this in my gold cover and fill it up with more epoxy. Then Ill have the first set of gold plated EMGs. I have no quams about cutting open this set, Id just like to know whats in there first....peace.
Wow, that's a project! A thing you might also want to remember is that they are vaccum sealed too, for better or ill.
I'd use one of the very small cutting wheels if I were you. You'll probably also need to order some of the Gibson Iommi pup covers since they have no polepieces.
Luke
Vacuum sealed? I wonder what thats all about? Im sure its not that important.....I hope...
I actually have a set of new gold covers without holes...and my white LP is just begging me to do this.
Anyone who has cut one up please stand up, please stand up
I've never felt the need to disassemble an EMG, but a suggestion - since you're basically shaving off the plastic cover and replacing it, you'll probably get better results with a belt sander, as you'll take off the plastic much more uniformly than with a Dremel. If you're afraid of taking material off too fast, you can just rub it back on forth on the belt without turning on the machine.
I would not go there the EMG will never be as quiet if you remove the cover trust me
Onme tip: THJe preamp is in the bottom, so if you´re gonna go to town, start fgrom the top. I´ve never opened one up myself, but I´m pretty sure you´ll knacker the PUP. But only doing it will tell for sure
show us pics of the innards of one of those things... this process must be documented
an autopsy!
on other thing, i beleive the 'vacuum sealing' thing is how they pot the coils, i guess once the pickup is actually made, it doesn't matter too much
just out of interest, which EMG is it? it wouldnt be my 81, would it?

your 81? unless JBfromHell had your 81, no...but thats the other thing, I have a new ZW set that I want to use, but I also have a older hard wired pair...hmmmmm.
If I do it, I will take pics and document the process, for sure.
Im hoping I dont have to take the plastic cover completely away, the belt sander is a good idea, If I can just trim it enough, its close right now. Wonder what the extra layer of metal will do to the sound??????
i think i now understand what ur gunna do. are u just gunna sand down some of the plastic from the emg until the gold cover fits or are u gunna try and grind the cover all the way off?
this sounds scary to me...i want pics hahahaha
oh and where did you find the solid gold cover with no holes? i could use a solid chrome one or two for a project.

I know 4nkam/MontyJay has done it.

Allparts sells solid covers in chrome, nickel, and gold. I've bought black ones off eBay also.
Yes ALLPARTS, though I found them at a guitar swap meet for 2 dollars, new in the pack....I would have given 20!
I'm all for tearing this mofo apart!
I wanna see what she's made of!
I'd totally do it, but I don't have a couple hundred dollars to waste...
If someone were to give me one for free, then i'd even go so far as to video-tape the whole process.

it looks like a dimarzio X2N under the cover,
large blade poles but it is underwound for a cleaner tone, it gets its power from being active.
what i love about emg's is that they are very clean actually but have real good power at the same time, being underwound comapred to a JB or whatever 15K pup they
dont have much honk.
