Im looking for a nice P-90 equipped guitar for under $1,000. I was looking at the $500 PRS SE Soapbar II, ive played one and liked it a lot. Then i noticed the Gibson SG Classic, its $350 more and looks like a really nice guitar. I have never played one though and dont know if they sound good or not. Anyone on here have one or played one? Ive owned an SG before but it was a humbucker equipped standard.
Which one would you recommend? Please help me!!!
I've heard the gibson classic series has quality control issues.Either way you go, look to rio grande for pickups, get a blues bar :P
They kick ass big time.
no matter what guitar it is, play it and choose for yourself. It's not going to do YOU any good hearing quot;gibson sux lol ur wrongquot; or quot;gibson rawks lol ur wrongquot;.
Based solely on looks i'd get this sg.
I have an SG (humbucker) and PRS Soapbar 2. The SG will have noticeably less sustain than the PRS. Also, the QC and workmanship on my Korean PRS was much better than on my American SG (I had to reslot 2 bridge saddles because they were originally slotted way off center).
I would play both through an amp and see which you like better. I haven't played an SG with soapbars, so I can't compare, but I do love the sound of my Soapbar SE.
SG for sure.
I played one of the old single cut Soapbars, it was a great guitar, and I would guess PRS would be of better qc standards (going on my own gibson experience, with my own gibson guitar).
So, I say PRS. (Got plenty of $$ left for pups too)
I have a soapbar II i just recently got as well as an SG special, and to me, the prs plays and imho sounds better than the SG. granted, the sg has humbuckers in it (stock neck/JB), but i guess i really just prefer the sound of p90's. also like mattpete said above, the QC was much better on the prs.
but just go try both and and see which you like. if price is a deciding factor, you can pick up the prs for very cheap. i got mine at guitar center for $350 new.
I have a PRS SE singlecut and LOVE it! The factory pickups sound great and the guitar is top notch quality! As you know, its a craps shoot with Gibson and their QC issues!
Heard very good things about that PRS, but I believe the model is discontinued... which is even more reason to get one

The Soapbar II is not discontinued, it's the double cutaway shape they released after the singlecut shape was pulled off the market.
Thanks guys, i really do like the PRS. It feels great and plays very well. I think im gonna get it!

Not any of the three I've owned, nor the few I've played in stores.
With that said, they are both killer gutiars. The SG definately has more grunt, rudeness, and thicker tone. The SE has killer fit amp; finish, a nice chunky neck, and played like butta. What I didn't like is the pickups don't have the P90 grind the Gibson has, the stock SE neck is boomy and the bridge is thin (I threw EMG's in it for a while). Up until 3 days ago, I owned one of each. I just sold the PRS in favor of the SG. Bang-for-buck, I'd give marks to the SE. But head-to-head the SG takes it.
I love the fact that they used a nice wide/fat neck, rather than doing what most imports do.....putting a puny neck profile on the import, compared to the US version.
Those Sunburst SE's with P-90's are tempting, especially when you can find used ones for $400. They can be setup to play just as good as an American, from what I've seen.
I'd still go for that SG in TC's post above!! I love that guitar.
TC is making me want the SG...it is very sexy
TC, which one played better in your opinion?
Neither, when USA Hamers like this can be had for around $600 on ebay. Hamers dont interest me. at this moment im torn between the prs and gibby, if i can find a good quality gibby i would like it more
I've got an Edwards SG up for sale. It's about as close as you can get to a Gibby, slightly thinner neck though. I'd be willing to sell it without pickups for a discounted rate- a set of Pat Cats and you'd be pretty close to what you want I think.
i bought the sg classic as well a few months back from musiciansfriend. guess i was lucky as my guitar was absolutely perfect and even my overly obsessive luthier was pretty floored too with the workmanship. looks fantastic, sounds amazing, and has an incredible finish. those p90s rule.

On mine in particular I would have the say the PRS had slightly easier action and a great neck shape, but I personally prefer the shape of the Gibson necks in general. The SG is a more resonant guitar though, better woods used I suspect.
I'd go for the SG. I'm not an SG guy but I do like that particular model.
The PRS is a great guitar, but to me will always be a 'bang-for-buck' buy, rather than a 'final destination' buy.
I mean, what would you rather have, a Soapbar SE or a McCarty Std Soapbar?
-whereas that SG will be of basically the same quality as the rest of Gibson's SG range.
But, as always, what you have to do is play both and figure out which one speaks to you.
Either way, you can't go too wrong. P90s rock.
