Hello everyone, i played with my band yesterday, (we play metal) and i had an discussion with the other guitar player about guitar tone.
He insists that the mid knob should always be turned down whatever he plays, but i think that mids are crucial to get a good sound, and most important to be heard!
So i was curious about what you think, what's best for metal, a scooped mid tone, a neutral tone, or a tone with some mids in it?
Cheers,
-Erlend
Mids about the 3:00 position.
I like my treble turned down (usually around 9-10 o'clock), the bass a little less than center (at about 11 o'clock), and the mids are around 3 o'clock.
i like a cross between #1 and #3
So its like this:
bass around 11:30-1:30 depending on mood
mids 3:30
treble 2:00
Mids are very important! Thats what gives your sound the body. I play with bass low, mids and treble higher.
I truly believe that mids are crucial, but it all depends on what kinda setup you're running. I know that my 5150 2 cuts like you wouldn't believe, so I cut my mids a fair bit in order to get a nice round bottom end. The mids cranked is good for leads, but I hate how they dissentigrate my bottom end, and since the majority of my playing is rythim I keep my mids cut.
I respect your opinion Swedenuck, but should'nt the bass guitar provide the low end?
I prefer a rhythm tone with little bass (to give room for the bass guitar), but alot of low mids and enough treble to give some chrunch. Then i just boost the high mids for solos to give more presence and cut, so that the guitar gets more present.
Well well, it's all about the ear that hear
Cheers,
-Erlend
Bass: 10:00
Mids: 2:00
Treble: 11:00
Depends on the equipment though.
Mids = the ****.
My settings are (B/M/T): 4.5, 5.5, 3.5.
Must. Have. Mids.
On my Rectoverb the lead channel knobs are currently:
B - 10:00
M - 2:30
T - 12:30-1:00
Gain - noon
fret fire thats about where I have my recto distortion channel at except my treble is a little higher
Erlend, I know what you're saying about leaving the bottom end for the bass, but I play 7's already and I'm more concerned with not having my bottom end breking up to the point of harshness.
Originally Posted by vinterlandfret fire thats about where I have my recto distortion channel at except my treble is a little higher'Tis a great setting, I'm on the Vintage mode. I've been getting into a lot of fusiony stuff lately so I've been rolling of the treble and the guitar's tone knob a bit.
I'm a recovered mid-scooper I used to think it sounded great, now it kind of makes me sick. Lately, I've been running everything around 6, and it sounds great.
i play with semi scooped mids i guess you can say at times depending on the song my mids are b/t 2 and 5 1/2, never on 0 that's a bit too much scoop.

Cutting the mids when doing the metal thing sounds great when you are playing by yourself. But for your sound to cut through the mix they are necessary. As for quot;I put my knobs herequot; it's all bullocks. Everybodys rig is different. But it all comes down to what sounds right.
I've was a teen in the 80's....I don't know how many players I saw playing with that scooped mid sound...they might have been playing the s--t...but how was I to know because I couldn't hear a note, I just saw fingers flying and could only hear bass, kick and snare.
I'm all about mids and highs. Let the bass play the bass. I used to crank my highs and mids on stage, and the sound guys would hate me. But people always came up and said they loved the guitar sound - because they could actually hear it. Starting out, I used to love quot;scooped mids.quot; Anymore, it sounds so sterile to me. It worked for Dime on Cowboys From Hell, but that's a rare exception IMO.
I run everything at 3:00 on my VHT and it sounds full and musical.
I personally hate the scooped sound. With no mids at all you might as well crank up a chainsaw and record it. That would still be heavy- just not very musical. I can see that for some music it probably fits OK but I probably wouldn't spend much time listening to it. A Custom Custom through a nice tube amp and a 4X12 is just great. Scoop the mids and it kills it.
I'm not huge on the scooped sound ... but it's music and tone and there's no wrong way about unless you're Jack White
It's like food ... season to taste
It depends.
For most stuff I run my mids somewhat high;
Recto Modern
Gain: 14:00 (I use the guitar's volume to drop the gain for rhythm)
Treb: 13:00
Mids: 13:15
Bass: 10:00
Pres: 10:00 - 13:30
That's my normal rhythm tone, but it isn't all that tight for some styles of playing. If I need a scooped rhythm sound I'll usually do one of the following (I never touch the mid knob on my amp, it's aways left at the same spot);
1) Scoop using a parametric EQ in the loop....this lets me get that scooped sound without killing the whole midrange as I cut the upper mids while boosting the lower mids and cutting some extra bass.
2) Up the presence and mids, turn the treble down to zero.....sounds somewhat like Korn.
3) Turn down the presence.
Of course, this is all for rhythm....leads are a different story.
