I am looking to put some new pickups in a MIM Strat. I am not to fussed on replacing the middle pup, but I was thinking of either Hot Rails or JB JR's. Or even a combination of both.
I am wanting an Iron Maiden - type tone, I know Dave Murray uses Hot Rails, and Janick Gers uses JB JR's, but what do you guys think?
ive always heard cool rails neck, vintage rails middle, and hot rails bridge was a great combo. would you only be playing iron maiden?
No, I would just prefer to have that kind of a tone in the music I create.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will bear it in mind.
wow i just did a search, and there is a ton of info on this subject. you might get more info if you search for things like quot;iron maiden hot rails jb jrquot; or quot;dave murray pickupsquot; or combinations of anything related.
You're right. The first search I did came up with a very good site. Thanks for the info.
One last question. For some reason, most of the MIM strats I have heard don't sound much better than Squiers. Will putting s in it make it sound much better?
it depends on what sound you want. if you want the warm, full bassy sound of mahogany, youre not gonna get it with alder (which the mim strats are made of, im pretty sure, although i think during the 90s it was poplar) but if the squiers are made of alder, they are gonna sound similar to the mim strats. the difference is the materials used on the hardware, tuners, etc, and probably the feel. the bottom line is that most likely new pickups will make it sound better, unless the guitar itself just sounds bad.
Agt; I was going to ask this question, so quot;robbied beequot;.. can yo ugive me some of these sites you came upon (I was leanign toward JB junior)
Bgt; Squiers are made of agathis and the MIM strats sound way better ( i own both).

not all squiers. the only ones that are agathis are the SE-100 pack, and some of the standards. the affinity strats are alder, and the deluxe series are mahohany

I have a standard, and it's agathis.... I thought ALL of them were.. hmmm... Isn't the standard supposed to be better than affinity, and isn't alder supposed to be better than agathis.

well ive played both, extensively and i can tell you that although the affinity is an ok guitar, and is made of alder, that it does not compare to the standard. the standard is much better in terms of neck, tuners, bridge, playability, etc. agathis isnt that bad of a wood. i thought it was similar or in the same family as basswood, which is also a good wood.
sorry robbie....

The best site I found for SD pickup ratings is this one
from : localhost/almost every review seems to praise the hell outta whatever pickup it is about, and some seem almost as if they were all written by the same person. But meh, it's pretty extensive.
robbiedbee just one thing musiciansfriend(owned by guitar center) owns harmony central, yes the seller of products owns a review site so just be a little skeptical. by the way in the vault u can get plenty of info

but they dont own the brains of reviewers. they wouldnt put a review in as an ad just to get you to buy something. but it is true that some ppl are retarted and you should read all or most of the reviews and go to other sites about the product, and if possible try it out before you buy it.
My Hot Rails Bridge made my thin, weak, twangy and lame bridge possition sound thick, fat, twangy and TOTALLY RADICAL BROOOO. With the neck and middle single coils i can play pretty, then hit the switch and my amp is overdriven....
