Tried out a bunch of guitars at GC today... for some reason the best ones were all Squires. Most all of em I played through a DSL 401 amp. Overview
Salesguy handed me a 3300 dollar PRS custom 22... Green Flame maple top... gorgeous guitar. But I can't honestly say it played any better than my cheapo Gibson The Paul II. With the stock pickups. It was solid though... Maybe my Gibson's not as fancy, but in many ways I'd choose the Gibson over the PRS. I guess you pay for quality, but not necessarily tone
Tried two other PRSs... a cheap SE soapbar (which I've been trying to convince myself to buy for a while) and an SE Santana. The SE Santana was a tonedead log. The soapbar was a very nice guitar... but the pickups don't sound... P90 enough for me if that makes sense. And were noisier than normal P90s.
Just for fun I tried a bunch of set neck Epiphone Pauls. They were all absolute crap. Pickups too buzzy even for me... No resonance... I've played chinese copies that are better (course the Epi is chinese... whatever)
So... what was I impressed with? Tried a Squire Satin HH strat, Regular Strat, and 51.
I may yet go back and buy the mapleneck CAR Strat. It was amazing for what the price was. Resonant... Decent pickups... beautiful. Not quite a fender, but still... excellent. The Satin strat made me regret having bought my schecter a few years ago and had the best tone of any guitar I played that day... the stock DDs sound great. The 51 was on par with the others.
What's up with that. I need to load me up on Squires instead of saving up for the sh!t I really want to buy.

I've been on the '51 bandwagon for a while, it is truly an amazing guitar for $149 dollars. They look cool as all get out and they have a truly unique and tasty tone, somewhere in the middle of a tele amp; a strat. I think it's a little closer to a tele, but a more airy sound than a tele, not really glassy like a strat but very bright amp; powerful in humbucker mode.
I actually have two of them, a blonde amp; a sunburst. I just switched the pickguards, put the black one on the sunburst (came with a white one) and now it looks incredible, kind of an SRV vibe.
Wana buy my 51???!?!?!?!?!?!
The '51 sure is a pimp guitar for the price, it felt awesome but the pickguard threw me for a loop, I'm used to the deepness of an archtop so yeah hahahaha it was interesting playing that. I do agree with the satin strat though, those are killer guitars.
There's a bunch of nice Squiers. saladin turned me on to the Walnut Tele. Surprisingly nice axe for $200. The bolt-on M-80, and Elite are very nice also.
YES! The new Squier's rock! Play a few and you'll find one that speaks to you. I recently bought a satin walnut Standard Tele, I changed the pots to CTS 250k's and put in a set of SD Quarter Pounders, dressed the frets and put on a new jack plate and this guitar is perfect! My band played a show in Detroit 2 weeks ago and several players complimented me on my tone and were amazed to learn I was playing through a Squire. My compliments go to for creating the QP's, if you want to rock out with your Tele then these are your pickup. I have a set of 59's in my #1 Tele and now find myself playing the Squier instead.
Yes! the squier 51 offers mega bang for the Buck ! The one I played was the
yellow color and was the only one in the store. if they had a sunburst??? I may have pull the trigger.

Played the mahogany ssh squire at SA last weekend and was plesantly surpirsed- well set up and good tone for $250-
I'm working on a p90 mahognay so I can't go this direciton but if I needed a mahognaey I would strongly consider the squire over an LP jr as I only play 25.5 anymore-
heh... the only thing I don't like about the Squire (most of em) is 25.5 And I've found that any guitar at GC needs setting up anyways...

I have to agree here. I played a bunch of Squiers at GC a few weeks ago and was impressed with the 51. Best value under $200. The Tele's were nice but I liked the MIM Tele's better. The satin Strat I played was sweet. I was very impressed with it's tone. The body had a nice resonant feeling to it, which I was and wasn't surprised about because wood without paint will resonate more.
I've played the p90 and humbucker squier tele customs, and both were great guitars for the price. I'll pick up the p90 model if I see one s/h or on special. Great necks. The frets and nuts need some work, but that's hardly surprising.
I am really jonesing for a new Squier Esprit...

Gas sucks

Great guitar. would have preferred that they'd kept with the original esprit headstock, though.

Yeah, the Esprit is a little more, but worth it. Really nice satin hardware, including the Duncan Designed's. I wish you could get those covers aftermarket.
I want a Squier Tele Vintage White or Sunburst! I'm not sure if they still have a Candy Apple Red?
they only had CAR at the GC I was at...
I wish they offered cool colors. Like Seafoam or Sonic Blue... or orange (for the strat)
My CAR jag is alright though strats need to be pastel (I'm thinking a Seafoam or Orange with comp stripe on my new 51 (thanks Mephis!)
Esprits look great. ****... I think I'm going to load up on Squires. I might just go back for that CAR strat

I just bought a Squier Strat in Daphne Blue, maple board. Pickups are OK for Singles and it has a heavy duty bridge with cast saddles (Like a MIA) and cast tuners instead of those cheap covered things. I was blown away. And it only cost $130 Canadian... I couldn't belive it!
I can't find it on the Squier site, so I have no idea what's the deal... it's plywood and a thin-ish body, but I LOVE the neck... I'm thinking about scaloping it and doing an Yngwie on it, or just loading it with a 'bucker and playing it to death...
Here she is!
I like the quot;these don't rip your hands openquot; bridge saddles on that thing.
