What is a cutaway back?

Thanks,
m

A cutaway is the part that´s quot;cut awayquot; from a traditional guitar shape (think dreadnought vs. Les Paul shape)

The Back is obvious.....but a quot;Cutaway Backquot; is new to me, at least the term....I´m thinking the backside may be quot;scallopedquot; to allow for better access, but off the top of my head that´s about all I can think of....

maybe something like the carved space on the fusion, at the neck joint? on the back

Exactly what I was thinking, that´s what´s referred to as a quot;Scalloped Heelquot; by most luthiers. Your Fusion (or a PRS, for example) also has a quot;Scalloped Hornquot; to improve high fret access.....

Yeah, I'm a bit confused. I know what a cutaway is, but a quot;cutaway backquot; is a term that I've never heard before. I tried googling it to find some pict that might clarify, but all the guitars that supposedly have this feature look exactly like guitars that have a... well, quot;normalquot; back.

is it not the tummy cut? like the ones they have in strats?

or maybe they mean a belly cut.?? something I am seeing more of on LP and other slab style guitars. Like the ****ey betts redtop.

thats a new one on megt;gt;

Also a possibility, good thinking....

But if it´s not that, not a scalloped horn (from the back) or a scalloped heel, I´m out of Ideas....

Thats my guess as well.

I have an early 80's Aria Pro ll PE-R80 guitar (very similar to a Les Paul) if you are not familiar with them.It has what is called a quot;heel lessquot; neck joint, It;s hard to explain, I wish i could post pics, but anyways, the back is cutaway.Basically where the kinda block heel on a Les Paul would kinda get in your way when your trying to hit those high notes, this one is basically no block heel. It goes right from the neck, and then smoothly on a kinda incline right to the back of the guitar.anotherwards where the heel would be on a Les Paul it looks like they just cut the block off and it is now smooth. It's actually nice to be able to wrap your whole hand around the fretboard all the way up to the highest frets (try that on a Les Paul)..........

sounds like a neckthrough aproach to set necks.. they're doing that on those new ibanez S series and schechters also i believe.

i'd like to see this done in a bolt on though.. i keep thinking about it since last month =P

That's the scalloped heel that Zerb was talking about.
Aria and Westone where big with that, they're not the only ones but they're the first that came to mind.
Davey:there is that with bolt on's,they round the heel-bevel the back of the treble horn and make the plates to fit the contouring.
I got really excited when I first saw this thread,I thought goody something new.

got a pic of it maybe?who knows, maybe we invent something new here

If I could get my d*mn computer to work properly I could show you a few pics.I have a guitar that is almost done that I cut the horn 1/4quot; deeper, scalloped the horn bevel and rounded the heel.Instead of a plate I mounted the screws into rings. But my computer refuses to do anything with pictures for some reason.

This?
