besides the difference in visual is ther a difference in tone or sound of the two les puals, because im looking into an edwards lp and I like both styles.

I always found Customs to be a little bassier and possibly muddier.

Not quite sure why...never could come up with a logical reason for it.

I put the pickups from a Standard clone into Custom clone and it did alot to brighten it up.

I find that Customs in general are a little brighter. I think due to the Ebony FB where a Standard has rosewood. Rosewood is a little warmer to my ears than ebony. Both are excellent choices it just depends what feels and sounds right to you!

If it's a Custom with a maple top, then it should be brighter than a Standard all else being equal. I don't find the fretboard changes tone that much, but it is noticeable. Now a Custom Black Beauty with the all mahogany construction would be a drastic departure from the Standard. Without having played one, I can only expect that the tone would be smoother with more midrange due to the all mahogany construction. That being said, I prefer rosewood over ebony and the look of trapezoids over blocks. But what the crap do I know?

Customs are usually muddier because they've usually used the '57 classic pickups, whereas the Standards use the 490/498, and now Burstbucker pickups, which are brighter.

Also, try changing the pots. They're usually 300K. A 500K CTS pot will brighten it up

has anyone played the edwards lp and if so, how does it compare between the epi and gibson

The Customs I find sound bigger, fatter, meatier. Just all out gut wrenching tone. It's the only Gibby LP I could be happy with. Every time I pick up a Custom and play it, the tone is there, the feel is there, and it sounds like I could take the walls down with a Marshall stack and it alone...LOL.

I'd say the Customs are a little bassier. I can't really put my finger on what it is. Probably more aesthetic than anything with me.

I dont think if they're still making them this way, but a looooong time ago LP Customs were a solid mahogany body and the Standards were a mahogany body with a maple cap, which made the Standards brighter with a little more clarity. I don't currently own a Standard, but my '76 Custom is solid bookmatched mahogany. It's real dark sounding and I have to do some heavy duty EQ to get it listenable to me.

I don't think the phrase quot;muddyquot; has ever been used to describe the 57 Classics.

The tone on one of my R8s is a 300k, I don't know about the volume or the other R8.

the original Custom had no maple cap---all mahogany. Nice tone, but more of a round jazz sound w/HB's. Customs with P90's tend to be a little brighter and more balanced...my fave. Looking for one...

Customs are a little more blunt sounding (in a good way), whereas Std's are a little more resonant. A lot of it has to do with how good the wood, pickups, and setup are.

I love both, and own both, but one thing is for sure.......the pickups are in my junk drawer! Once you get your LP Custom or Std dialed in with the perfect Duncans, you can guide the tone any direction you want......even if the purpose is to make your Custom sound more like a Std or visa versa.
Or, just to make a less expensive LP sound like a more expensive one.

my only test with lp custom and standar are with epiphone and i have to say that the custom is more beffy and fatter, but the treble pup is quite metal tone live... and the solo is the quite smooth, and the combination is the best for rythm parts
