fender's special edition showaster SSS comes with those. how do they sound compared to APII's? especially on low E and A strings.

They are EXACTLY as described by SD: the smooth, round sound of Alnico II on the treble strings, with the snap and percussiveness of Alnico V on the bass strings. I have one Strat with APS-1's and one with 5/2's. I like 'em both.

BTW, the 5/2's replaced the Fender pickups on a Tex-Mex Strat. The Tex-Mex pickups were pretty good, but the 5/2's have a lot more depth and definition.

They will not be as glassy sounding. I realy like the ones I have. I did change out the bridge though. I find that most sets, unless the bridge is over wound, that the bridge does not match real well with the neck and middle.

These pups are an enigma to many b/c they seem too good to be true. I wish Duncan had some clips of them.

I wish they had clips, too. I tried the 5/2 Tele set, and the Tele bridge pickup was excellent -- delivered just as the SD blurb describes. However, the Tele neck pickup was rather dull and underpowered. I ended up returning them for a set of Antiquity I Tele pups. However, I am very interested in the possibility of combining the 5/2 Strat neck and RWRP middle with a Twangbanger bridge pickup. I think that would be a great combo for a slightly beefed up Strat tone with good low end thump and twang.

second that!
there is a few reviews of the fender model mentioned above but they aren't that useful. it's interesting those five-two's come with a set-neck fender guitar. set neck guitars tend to make low string sound wide, less snappy. A5 magnets are supposed to make them more focused, I guess.

I imagine the wound strings sound like you're using an SSL-1 and the G,B, and E strings sound like you're using an APS-2.

Overwound as in the Custom Bridge 6.9k (vs. 6.7k for the others)? Or a custom shop wind?
