As you may know I'm currently searching for an amp that'll go into my new flat but should also deliver some live gigging power...
So I saw that little DSL401 Combo... it's going for 888€ new which is a very nice price compared to the 50W DSL top for 1090€...
Does anyone know if it's good and if it has enough power for live performances?

thanks

I think it's pretty good, and it's got plenty of volume. I like to think of the 401 as the quot;industry standardquot; for modern medium-sized valve combos - if there's an amp that you prefer the sound of, then that is a good amp indeed!

For that money, you could pick up an amp with better tone and still save some. What kind of sound are you going for?

The Plexi Marshall sound...

Eh, well maybe not the best for a PLEXI marshall sound... let's face it, old marshalls sound different to new ones. I like that amp, but you want to be the next Hendrix, and I'm happy just to turn everything up to 10 and bash out I Am The Walrus 20 times in a row....

Go for a Laney AOR. JCM800 for cheep!

Laneys aren't easy to get over here... and if I had the money to buy a JCM800 i'd buy the 1959 Plexi...

Are Traynors easy to get there? The YCV50 runs on EL-34's for that classic Marshall sound.

peavey classic, maybe

Haven't seen Traynor over here... I mean maybe they are available but not many... dunno
Peavey classics are available in all variations though...

Are you able to go to a shop and try out a DSL 401? I'd recommend that.

Yes of course I am... I'd never buy an amp I haven't tested... I'm just asking all that stuff because sometimes you notice the real character of gear only after some time using it and I can't go to the shop and use it for days

Btw... Bob Balch from Fu-Manchu uses a DSL... and he has a quite cool sound with it, so this should be fine too... you see.. my problem is I like so many different styles of music it's hard to get an amp that does it all...

Yeah, quot;Marshallquot; and quot;Versatilequot; aren't 2 words you tend to see together. Still, if it's crunchy or rocky stuff you're after, then it should still do you well.

I HATE the Marshall DSL 401. There are two combo amps out there that are less money and do the marshall thing better than that amp, I actually compared the V-series I own directly to that marshall in the store before I bought it and ended up liking it better.

from : localhost/www.traynoramps.com/products....id=318amp;type=32

from : localhost/www.crateamps.com/html/product.cfm?pid=105

its really good, actually

the speakers blow, but the amp itself is good

if you're gonna rock it stock i'd reccomend the 4x10 one, contrary to popular belief, you CAN get a good rock sound out of a 4x10

And the Crate is about 350-400€ more than the dsl401...

Is the overdrive on the classic any Marshall Plexi like? Maybe I could buy a 2x12 and replace the speakers with Greenbacks... I personally don't like 10s that much...

from : localhost/too bad those Crate's are higher over there. Those sound very nice, also. I played one in a small local shop before I got the Traynor and when I went back they had already sold it. It was a special order that they don't stock. The built-in effects are a definite plus.
