Is it better to pick a pickup that is brighter than you normally like it for the purposes of cutting through? Or can that all be done through amp eq?
id say EQ - just boost the right mids and you're sorted
For a guitar player, cutting through is all about lots of mids!
If you play with a lot of gain or soak, dial the gain back a little bit and the notes will be more solid. Past a certain point, killer crunch turns into just killer bees.

In my experience its both, but I settled with a fuller sounding pup and bring it out with lots of mids on the EQ.
a pup can help i found that the duncan JB,custom ,DD, dime all cut very good for high output buckers
if you want to SLICE through the mix the JB or custom cuts like no other
