A random eBay purchase strikes again lol. i saw this pop up and it had one of my favorite charvel graphics (big mouth) yet it's not a charvel which is one part of how odd it is. it's and Aria Pro ZZ deluxe...made in japan and going by the date codes on the aria site it seems to be a 1982 but i'm still trying to make sure about that. i think it may be a bit newer...as in 84-86. anyway it is a bit odd 1 because of the famous charvel graphic on an aria and 2 b/c of the maple neck which i had never seen on a ZZ before (not that i know much about them). it has an original wood screw mounted 80s floyd added to it, an older duncan PATB-1 in the bridge and added schaller tuners (all done to it in the 80's). overall it's a pretty cool guitar in real good condition for its age...and the oiled maple neck is actually damn nice. well it was a random buy and was low price so what the heck, my first wild shaped guitar.

wow, sure is wacky, not my cup of tea, but all looks in good condition.
Takamine had a similar model about the same time. I thought it was the wildest looking thing I'd ever seen and damn near bought one. Not sure why I didn't.
It looks cool, totally 80's, but I like it
Which pickups are in it, btw.??
That's awesome!
schhhhhhweeeeeeeeeeeet! I like it!
thanks guys...yeah it's a bit wacky for some but i quot;neededquot; to add something crazy to my heard and this was screaming to me lol.
sune: the pickups are a duncan PATB-1 in the bridge and i just stuck a fender atomic humbucker in the neck for now. i think i may switch them out for something a bit wilder in color and sound and look. and X2N in some crazy color seems fitting for this guitar lol. still trying to decide on what to put in the neck and what color(s) to use.
Mike
COOL! Congrats!
Go find some old Dio era pics of Viv Campbell..he played some of those pointy Aria's
hows the PATB sound?
That's a pretty funny graphic on that one. It's a bonus that someone added the Floyd, because it probably had a funky-bad stock trem system.
As you know, I love reverse metallic bursts from Fender, and scored this for $119 on Ebay this morning. After I get the other parts, like an American Std rosewood neck, I'm going to use your idea of a black pickguard with a nickel humbucker and 1 single coil. Who do you buy those custom HS pickguards from, and how much are they?cool lookin guitar
1 on what jeffb said about VIV !
thanks again.
EX- the patb-1 is actually pretty damn cool. nice and fat even with a floyd on a huge hunk of alder and an all maple neck. great harmonics too for dive bombs hehe. i'm happy with it and am going to keep it for a strat build but for this guitar i want an even more agressive tone so i'm going to go with an x2n bridge and evo neck i think to make it scream (no pun inteneded lol).
GJ- yeah i got lucky and it has the better vintage 80s floyd when they made them a bit better than today. plus the stock tuners were replaced with schallers so it was a big score in the hardware dept. even if the guitar sucked. but, it's actually fun to play and oddly comfortable lol. anyway, i get all my guards from warmoth. a matte black .090 would look sweet on that body! nice score, i can't wait to see this one done! in the matte black i think they are $20 or $22.
shred: yeah i forgot viv had a 1/2 black 1/2 white on an angle aria zz like this with a rozewood board that he played alot back then. there were alot of guys using aria back in the 80s even Yngwie.

That thing's sw33t!! If only it weren't maple...argh!

Actually I was just thinking, I don't really mind maple aside that it's blinding...that birdseye stuff that is...but I HATE that sticky coating Fender puts on some of its necks, I just hate that junk and is why I dislike painted necks but can deal with them (I might take the V-250's neck off and quot;refinish itquot;)
looks awesome to me
yeah i hear ya, some fenders finishes are a bit odd and can get sticky. thus why most of my maple necks are just oil finished like this one is. you won't find a smoother/faster neck than an oil finished maple one after a good steel wool job!!

That thing says 'replacement charvel strathead neck' to me...
My second guitar was a an Aria ZZ just like that but black and with a Fender style vintage trem. I bought it new around 83-84, and I think it was pretty cheap -- in the $250-$350 range.
