OK.. I have wanted a custom made electric for quite some time. I already have a custom handmade acoustic that is just killer. I have been talking with my luthier friend at Baruke Guitars and here's what I have come up with.
1.The guitar would be somewhat modeled after the Telecaster shape since that's my favorite guitar. The neck would be shaped to the same contour of my B Bender Tele. And since Allen doesn't like the Tele headstock and to keep with the traditional Baruke headstock shape the tuners would be locking and 3 to a side.
2. The neck would be set in and possibly a through the body (I can't decide). The body would be mahogany with a bird's eye maple top and transparent sunburst or tobacco burst finish with white flamed maple binding.
3. As far as PUPs I would do some SD p90's or some TV Jones FilterTron Classics.
4. I also may investigate putting a Bigsby tremelo on it.What is missing or even better what is over-the-top about this idea? To me this exact guitar with the FilterTrons would be a dream come true. It would be like if a Gretsch and Tele colided.
I think if you're putting Filtertrons in it, you're required by law to make the body hollow. So make it a thinline.
sounds somewhat similar to the guitar that JohnJohn is building me...except i'm going with a hardtail and humbuckers!
specs: if i remember them correctly
neck: is a piece of 20 yr old mahogany, set, fat like a Monaco with a birdseye mable board, 22 medium jumbo frets, 3x3 sperzel locking tuners, custom 3 cross inlay at 12th fret, lightly finished for a smooth feel.
body: tele shaped white oak/birdseye maple carved top, back countours and input jack location like a brian moore all finished in butterscotch with butterscotch ghost flames and trans black semi-hollowed out like a 335 and flamed maple binding throughout.
ware: nickel covered 59n and CCbridge, les paul 3-way, 500k push pull volume and tone pots, hipshot hardtail bridge.so in answer to your question...it sounds like it has the potential to be an awesome guitar...GO FOR IT!!!

I guess I'd ask what you're trying to achieve. As someone who's been through the custom guitar process, I'll tell you that you'll probably be happer with the results if you have an overall vision and choose features based on that vision rather than creating a guitar that's just a random combination of cool ideas.
Along the same line, if you're really going for the Gretch/Tele hybrid thing, I'd ditch the neck-through thing. I'd suggest a long tenon maple bolt-neck design like PRS uses. That way you keep the bolt-on tonality of the Tele while still having great access to the upper frets (presumably your rationale for neck-thru).
Sounds pretty cool. I definitely want to see pics if you ever build it.
Some people might think that Bigsby is a little over-the-top, though.
Actually, I love the idea of the Bigsby.

I do have a vision after owning every last flavor of Gretsch guitar there is. I love the look and especially the sound of Gretschs and Teles. My biggest problem with all of the Gretschs I have owned is that the neck, even though very comfortable, isn't quite what I like. It seems that the fretboard isn't what I like. I hope that makes sense. I really am not trying to copy the tonality of a Tele or a Gretsch ver batim as far as that goes. The main reason for going with the Tele body style is stricly for asthetic value I just love the Tele body style. To me the FilterTron has always caught my ear. It seems to have plenty of nice crisp highs and snap for some of the country stuff I get into without getting too thin. Yet to my ear and playing style is has enough balls without being muddy too. This is nothing more than my vision of my perfect guitar. There is a reason behind all of the different parts being the way they are. I am really not looking to copy the sound or look of any traditional guitar these are just the ideas that seem to work in my head. Keep in mind they have to get the approval of the genius , Allen at Baruke. He may not let me do some of the things since his name is on the headstock. He and I still have to hash this stuff out.
I've got exactly the same issues wanting a 25.5 maple neck and a mahogney body for p90s- I'm going with L5 body, but tone should be much the same-
Very interested in your decisions- I wont build mine until fall-

Sounds cool. My own personal preferences would be to dump the Bigsby. They always strike me as looking like fender-pullers. (The car part - not the guitar maker.)
Also, and this may just be me, I think I'd go for either a flame top or a Tobacco burst, but not both. That could be a little quot;busyquot; looking. Either, on its own however, would be gorgeous.

If you put Filtertrons you are also recommended to put a Bigsby... one of the big ones LOL.
I'd go with the tobacco burst, p90's (or maybe one in the neck and a tele in the bridge), bigsby (especially cool if you go with the one for a tele, but it will limit you to a tele bridge pup). Go for a set neck or a PRS type bolt-on.
Other considerations, get it chambered. Also, if using a B5 (which means your using 2 p90 or Filtertrons) try to get it capable of being string through. Thats how I always imagined a costum tele. Bigsby for when I want vibrato, string through for when I want some more sustain. Don't know if its possible but its my opinion.
