I admitted that I had been a gearholic. I used to by a lot of gears including guitars (13 now), amps (4 now), pickups (easily 100 so far), pedals (15 now), pickguards, hardware, locking tuners, Tonepros, pots, caps, straps, etc etc.
I stopped doing that few months ago. I don't swap pickups anymore. I just pick up a guitar and play it and I sound pretty darn good (I am very familiar with my amps though). My conclusion: stop gearwhoring is a way to tone heaven.
Cheers

That's good Brisk, now you can spend lest time thinking about what gear goes with what and actually play.
BTW you haven't purchased one of those DaisyRock guitars yet??

I'm with ya Brisk. I feel like I've hit the end of my 'jones for more.' I think what happens is you get into a situation where you can actually afford the things you've always wanted, then you don't know when to stop. I was in a perpetual upgrade mode for well over a decade, and now that I've got what I consider my 'dream gear', I get more enjoyment out of bonding with it, rather than thinking of my next move.

At this point, I just concentrate on playing, and learning the nuances of what I already have. I still like moving pickups around though, just to make those guitars change for the better, once in awhile.

I guess buying a new Nissan truck calmed you down, huh? haha

Actually, I start forgetting which guitar has which pickups and that doesn't bother me at all.
About DaisyRock, I am not hardcore death metal enough to deserve it.

My Nissan is a thing of beauty. It's getting broken in rather nicely and I feel better everyday. I am going to drive all the way to CA to run over your Dakoda and you will know who got the real truck. LOL.

Same here. I sold off all my other axes and bought a Gamp;L Invader. Only electric I have now.

I am suprisingly GAS free as well, except for the possibility of a different amp. I can afford to buy most any reasonable guitar I want (excluding investment grade Strats, Tele's and LP's) and am happy with what I have. 2 LP's, possibly going down to one, an 80's shread guitar with floyd, a Dean Hardtail (PRS type body), American Strat, Double Fat Strat and annother Strat on the way, combined with a good Acoustic is all I really need or want for my talent level and frequency of playing*.

I need to play more and learn the intricacies of each instrument and how it reacts to my style of music and amplifier. I know I spent too much time obsessing about the next pickup or the next guitar or the next pedal....too much to spend any time playing.

All of this is subject to change however at a moments notice.*

well...thats very good for you guys...I have GAS same as I did yesterday but thats not likely to change! That said I still get in 3 or so hours a day of play time...

this thread is hilarious...you guys are crazy quot; I have 12 guitars now, and 8 amps, and i finally don't feel the need to have more!quot; ahhahah

i have 3 guitars now, and i feel like thats too much, i'm getting rid of one

ya know...I know guys that only want/need 2 or 3 guitars and 1 or 2 good amps...NOT ME!!!

I LOVE GEAR...guitars, amps, FX, recording stuff, drums...bring it all on!!!

i hear ya.....maybe its the eternally pissed left handed-ness in me that attacks righties for having many guitars? neh, i still couldn't see myself having more than 3 guitars and 2 amps

Same goes for me, I just couldn't be satasifyed till I got a tube amp and 2 descent guitars. Now I got what I want and it's time to go back to lessons some time soon.

You're very right, Brisk.

I'm not even a fraction as far as GJ or the others on my journey to 'tone heaven,' but I can really see where you're coming from. My main guitar has been in the shop for the past few weeks, and all I've had to play on is my old Tele that I bought for $150 used as my first guitar. I haven't touched it in ages, often dismissing it as a piece of junk.

I still have had to get my playing in, so I've surrendered myself to pick the Tele up and ignore its wretched sound and just practice. I've been floored with some of the tones and awesome riffs that have come out of these two weeks of playing the Tele through my cheap Crate practice amp. There's one for the record.

Have you considered one of these?

But I still have too much stuff!!

I fit in the same category as Brisk or Gearjoneser. Its gotten to the point where I spent so much time researching gear that now I have pretty much the *exact* tone I'm looking for. I always wonder if there's something quot;betterquot; out there, but I love the flexibility and tone of my rig (plus it doesn't kill my back ).

It's always funny how much better you play when you don't focus so much on tone. I got pretty obsessed for a while and now I'm starting to calm down. It feels good to take the gear you have and make it work for you. Over time, I've learned how to dial in my amp in almost any condition and make it scream. I've learned how to balance all the right frequencies for each of my guitars and stuff like that can only be learned after using the same gear for a while (I've been loving my Fargen since November '04).

Brisk, GJ, the_Chris... you guys are all right. You can only REALLY grow if you forget about gear and practise with the tools you have. The difference is, you guys own high-range gear. From a person with a 30w Solid State amp the perspective is much different.

i still have g.a.s....probably due to the fact that i have zero electric guitars and amps...lol!

i could see myself being pretty happy with 4 or 5 guitars and a couple amps though...!?

i do spend ENOURMOUS amounts of time thinking and researching about them and enjoy it alot...but i've basically came down to this...

guitars
i want a dual hum tele (my layaway schecter)
a standard tele (probably a hwy1)
an LP type guitar (too many to chose from)
a strat
a semi-hollow
a ric

amps
a small combo (traynor hopefully)
a nice 2x12 cab (avatar probably)
a couple heads (maybe a Celtic or Rivera and a Mesa or Krank)

pedals
a vox wah
an overdrive
a distortion
a chorus/delay

it's actually not that much

right now i'd just like to have my Schecter a Traynor and a Wah!?

The thing with me is that I tend to buy gear on impulse, not because of some longing deep within my soul. If I see something I love, I buy it. The good thing is I'm very picky, so I don't end up with a huge arsenal of guitars and amps.

I completely understand where you're coming from though. I am trying to focus on improving my playing these days, and other than the GRP project (see other thread) I really don't have any GAS going on right now. It's a good way to live.

The big thing for me has been downsizing and reducing my effects usage. The only real effects I use consistently now are some sort of delay, a wah, and my OCD overdrive pedal. I have a few others is use occasionally but thats my rig right there.

I used to be a total effects nut... i would not play without like 7 or so effects on my board.
