Hey guys,

I'm kinda new to the ebay parts buying thing - there's a lot of nice parts there - like made in usa strat bodies etc - some of them are at low prices - does anyone know of a scam or something? this one company just seems to have enough parts to build a hundred fender strats - what's the deal how do they get the parts and why do they sell them as parts online? are they seconds in quality or what?

THe nice prices disappear about 15 minutes before the auction closes. Look at the completed auctions.

But you can get lucky, I like the auctions that close late on sunday night PST.

I've bought a few parts from ReliableFender on eBay (I guess that is who you are refering) and I asked where all the parts come from (they are Fender parts from what used to be a whole guitar) - they won't say.

Maybe they buy all the guitars that UPS and FedEx damages.

I've thought about doing the same business he does......apparently, it's perfectly legal to scour the city for used Fenders, disassemble them, then resell the parts. I would have thought that it's illegal to have an ongoing business of doing that, but I guess not. Afterall, it's YOUR guitars....you bought them fair and square, and there's no law against selling them used.

I can tell you one thing.....those auctions end with a bunch of guys fighting each other with snipes. That tells me it's a good business to buy strats for $450 and resell them in parts for $800......just a bit of a hassle to deal with that many transactions per guitar.

Yup. Buy a slew of used Strats and part 'em out. It bugs me that someone would buy a perfectly good guitar and tear it down to sell the parts. It's pretty obvious that's what they're doing when you see 10 auctions in a row from the same person for guitar parts from the same year for the same guitar.

The could be Parts from stolen guitars ya know....I mean it would be Pretty difficult to check the serial number on a guitar thats in peices. And that would also explain why they won't say where the parts come from. Just an idea.

It's just a simple business to run. Place ads looking to buy a Fender strat or tele. Grind each seller down to less than $500. Take them apart, photograph them, and package them. After each part sells, you've made at least $300.
Do about 4 guitars a week, and that's $1200 a week you're making!

The real suckers are the guys who are buying those parts. If you just do what he does, and buy a cheap American Fender locally, you can get the whole guitar in a case for $500. If you buy from that guy on Ebay, you're giving him $500 for a neck, body, and shipping.

Yeah I thought about that - The funny part is you start to think if you've got the neck and the body you've got 90% of the guitar - cause you'd replace the pickups anyway, right? =) But you have to count buying a new bridge, buying new tuners, screws, scratchplates, pots, yada yada yada...
