What are the main differences between these two axes?

To my ears, the SG is all mids while the LP has more lows and more highs, probably due to the thicker body and maple cap.

Thanks for the reply but I think you may have misunderstood me. I didn't mean to compare a Les Paul to an SG. I was comparing two types of SG's - the Standard and the Les Paul/SG reissue, which was the guitar that replaced the traditional Les Paul for several years during the 1960's. The guitars are found here:

I had one of the 3 pup SG/Les Pauls customs (white w/ gold hardware) when no-one wanted them or cared...the ones they charge $5000 for now

Hated the 3 pups (middle one gets in the way) and thats why I sold it. It's got the quot;weakerquot; original neck joint as well (which I prefer from a feel standpoint)

If I was gonna buy an SG, I'd prolly go with the 61 reissue..which is pretty much the same thing as an quot;SG/LesPaulquot;..same neck joint...same pickguard, etc.

How do I know if my SG's have the weaker neck joint? Whats the difference?

They have changed the SG several times over the years...

look at this one from 74, the guard is like the one on the LP/SG Reissue but look at the position of the neck pickup

The truth is that there is little difference except the pickguard. The later style ones are front routed and the pickups mount on a pickguard where the older ones are rear routes and have pickup rings...

While this is true, what I was trying to get at is the reissue 61 and the SG LP will have the original neck joint which is considered weaker than the more modern SGs (neck joins the body at different location, fretwise).

Look at the neck joint on this reissue and then at a modern SG Standard

Ahhh... I see clearly now... what a big difference that makes!

It looks like the longer neck joint on the newer SG's will give more support to the neck and also more sustain... Bonus!

Due to the differing angle of the pics, it looks more pronounced that it really is...but there is a difference...

personally I prefer the old style...from a quot;feelquot; standpoint..and I vastly prefer the old style pickguard aesthetically...I personally would not buy an SG for sustain in the first place, so that would be a moot point to me, but yes..I understand your reasoning.

The heel is different on the Standard. It typically has a darker finish and the top horn on the Standard is not bevelled the way the '61 is. I like the '61 better

I am right to assume the older neck joint quot;feelsquot; better because it is lower on the frets and less obtrusive on the neck?

I also prefer the way the smaller pick guards look, but to me, its not worth the extra $$$ for a re-issue. I haven't had the opportunity to play a re-issue with the old style neck joint, but I guess it wouldn't matter much to me now since I'm already used to, and have no problems with the newer style neck joint.

Thanks for the info... I learned something new today...

I'll let you know when mine is finally done.

I have a '62 Les Paul Custom that I am in the midst of restoring. The neck should be done soon and then things should really get rolling on it.

Wattage-
I've got a 61 special that I would like to restore- have you found a source for parts?

Yeah I just prefer the smaller heel and easier access. Also maybe cos the first SG I ever played was a VERY early one w/ P90s and maestro that a friend owned.....had the small heel.

Funny story...

My dad's got an SG/LP. It's either a 61 or 62. A few years ago, the neck joint separated, and he had to have it reset. The luthier discovered they'd mounted the bridge half an inch too close to the nut, and ended up lenthening the neck to correct the scale.

That was the guitar I started playing on, and I remember that if you turned it so the strings faced the floor, the tuning would drop like 3 whole steps

The early SG Standards, up through 1966, are essentially the same guitar as the Les Paul SG's, although there were with some minor changes with knobs, number of pickguard screws, etc.

The first major change was in 1967 with the introduction of the larger pickguard and longer neck joint.

Catastrophe came in 1970 when Gibson eliminated beveling of the horns, a change in the neck angle and numerous other downgrades. It was because of these design changes that Pete Townshend stopped using SG's and started playing Les Pauls.

This is a simplification of early SG changes. If you want to know more check out quot;Guitar History Volume 2, Gibson SGquot; by John Bulli. It's a thin book but crammed with with important information for serious SG fans.

I prefer the old style, only ever played one of them though.

I do have a source for some parts though, what are you looking for?

Jeff I will have some pics shortly.
